My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Henry, a very handsome 2 year old Husky mixed with either Doberman or Rottweiler. Henry was found wondering around southern Indiana, and he was fairly thin and neglected looking. Despite calls to the owner listed on the paperwork, no one came to claim Henry. Henry waited his turn and as luck would have it, an adoption took place in a foster home in Illinois. This allowed a spot for one lucky dog and this time it was Henry's turn for some good luck. Henry tested negative for heartworm and was loaded up to begin looking for his new foster home.

Henry arrived from the transport at the same time as a large, young energetic female foster arrived and he played with her just fine. He has in his foster home 2 senior shepherd mixes who have made it clear they don't play and Henry has never bothered them. Every once in awhile, the older dogs get playful and Henry happily runs along behind them. Henry seems very aware of other dog's body language and does well in his foster home's pack. He likes to be first in line for petting and eating. He has shown no signs of guarding his food with humans and will allow his foster mom to pet him while he eats with no problems. He also takes treats very gently. Henry was babysat in a home with 2 large young male dogs and he did great with them. He waited to figure out the dynamics and then happily joined in with the play time. He shared dog toys just fine with them as well. Henry has another young shepherd who visits his foster home as well as a puggle and he loves to entertain them. There is a little Chihuahua who lives in Henry's foster home and Henry loves to play with him as well. He will get into a down position on the floor to make the playing more equal - such a funny site to see him playing with a dog the size of his head!

Henry lives with 5 dog savvy children ages 4- 17 years old, and he does fine with them. He has shown no issues with chewing their toys or marking in the home. Henry loves to be outside with the children in his foster home and has responded to learning how to retrieve the tennis ball. While fetch is not a game normally associated with his breeds, he certainly loves to entertain and be a part of the family so he happily goes along with what his people ask of him. Although he is a fast, agile, fun-loving dog outside, once inside he is better described as a lazy class clown that loves to be where his foster family is. His favorite time with children is when he can curl up on one of the teenagers' lap while they do their homework. This big guy is convinced he is a lap dog :)

Due to his intelligent nature, his foster mom feels he should go to a home with dog experience. Henry is smart and he needs an owner who is equally dog smart. He loves to have the one-on-one training time and would thrive with a basic obedience class. He is currently learning basic obedience in his foster home and he is such a people pleaser that it is coming along quickly! He already knew 'sit' and 'paw'. He is working on his 'stay' and 'release' command which have been important because he lives in a house with kids who are always coming and going. He is also learning 'up' and 'off' so that he waits until he is invited up on to the couch. He knows 'leave it' and 'take' which are handy commands in a house full of kids' toys. He knows 'go to bed' for his crate command. He is also very food motivated so new commands are not hard to introduce him to because he will work for treats! He also responds well to verbal praise. He is good with men and really tries hard to be part of the family. Due to the extreme cold, Henry has not had a whole lot of leash work. He tries to walk his people but if he has a dog savvy walker, he will fall into a heel. Henry loves all sorts of weather and has shown no issues with thunderstorms. If he has to potty outside of the normal potty times, he will sit by the back door signaling to his people that he needs to be let outside.

Henry loves to be a shadow to his foster family especially when it is time to prep dinner. Henry will stretch out as much as he can so that whomever is cooking has to step over and around him. It's a small price to pay when one looks down and sees all 65+ lbs of Henry gently snoring away! Henry likes to lie down right on someone's foot or hook their foot with his paw so he is touching his human. Despite being very needy for attention, Henry has shown no signs of separation anxiety when his family is gone. He settles in his crate nicely and dozes until it's time to get out of the crate.

Henry has been neutered and is up to date with his vaccinations including bordetella and rabies. He has proven to be excellent with his house training and is crate trained as well. Henry is crated for a few hours during the day and he was originally crated at night. With how well he did at night, he earned the privilege to be left free in the bedroom where he sleeps contently all night until morning.

Henry is looking for a committed owner who will love him forever. When Henry finds his forever family, his foster family will rescue another dog. That is the importance of adopting - it allows another dog to be rescued too! Henry needs a dog savvy owner to guide him into adulthood. He is a pleaser and thrives on consistency. His adoption fee is $200. Henry is microchipped and up to date with all of his vaccinations including bordetella and rabies. If you are interested in learning more about Henry, please call his foster mom Mary at 630-585-7927. Check out his video to see how well his training has been going with this handsome guy!
