My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I am going to be fostered with intent to adopt but I hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

We received an email from a shelter in AL that often contacts us about our popular “black goldens,” asking if we could take an adorable boy who was found in Mobile County, AL and went unclaimed. Seeing how beautiful he looked in the photo they attached and having a wonderful temperament, of course we said YES! His advocate at the shelter shared, “Potter is a 1.5 year-old male, who's about 35 pounds. He's a little shy, but incredibly sweet. He just let me pet him and hold him”

Potter has soft, expressive eyes that seem to look right into your heart. He often looks to his humans for direction and assurance, and will then wag his tail to and fro when you say, "good boy!” Potter is a great size for someone who prefers to have a big dog but may not have the living situation to accommodate one. He is a happy fellow who loves everyone he meets! He is good with other dogs and is even tolerant of cats! Lisa, our volunteer in AL, visited with Potter and remarked how sweet this munchkin is. "He was shy at first, like for all of 3 minutes, and then was totally friendly to me and to the 2 vet techs who were playing with him. He would rotate between all of us for some petting and loving! He has pretty nice manners and even when he jumps up, if you tell him "down," he will sit right in front of you like a good boy!"

Potter has a uniquely colored coat that is velvety black with patches of glistening golden. This cutie patootie is up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and micro-chipped. He was already neutered when he was picked up as a stray so we are certain he was someone's pet - what a shame they did not come looking for this wonderful boy! Potter needs some work on his leash skills but tries very hard to understand what he is supposed to be doing. With a little guidance, this boy will have leash walking down pat! While Potter does not have over-the-top energy, he is a young dog with a healthy level of energy so an active adopter is needed. Potter will be ready to come north to his forever home on 1/28/17. This boy is not going to last!

Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
