My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ADOPTED 3/18/17!!!

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

1/24/17 Update: Look at Lena’s news pictures!! She looks like a different dog from the sad girl in the shelter, and it is easy to recognize the Golden personality in this sweet girl! She is happy and soaking up attention at our vet clinic, and we have learned what a loving, easygoing dog she is. Lena perks up with her tail wagging nonstop whenever she sees people and gets petted. When she goes outside she gets a little burst of excited energy, then settles down nicely. Lena loves a routine and soft voices, so we feel a quiet home without young dogs and children will be best for this gentle girl. Because she is a little on the shy side, Lena will be an amazing dog for someone who wants quiet companionship. She is a love and so much prettier in person than her pictures show. We are so glad we saved her! Lena has started her heartworm treatment and is doing well. She will be ready for her forever home in mid-March. But it is not too soon to ask about her.

Lena's Story: In mid-December we were asked to save Lena, a 9-year old Golden/Lab mix who was found as a stray in Louisiana. Although we had to rely on a quickly-taken shelter picture, one look at her sweet sugar face convinced us to help her. She had a growth on her chest, fur loss, and bad skin from a flea allergy.

Fast-forward to mid January and Lena is a new girl!! The growth has been removed and we are thrilled that it was benign, so it is no longer a concern for Lena. Her skin and coat are improving each day with the help of antibiotics and medicated baths. She has been spayed, had her vaccinations, was micro-chipped, and has begun her heartworm treatment. (Oh how we wish so many rescue dogs did not need to get through heartworm treatment!!) Lena gets around fine with no mobility problems.

Lena is a little shy when she first meets someone new but she warms up quickly. She is not an “in your face” dog, undemanding and preferring a more laid back approach to new friends. To make Lena’s day, just speak softly to her and pet her. She looks right into your eyes and has the sweetest face! Her pictures do not come close to doing justice to her pretty face, and we are waiting for better pictures of this sweet dog. Lena gets along fine with other dogs, but does not need other dogs as some dogs do. She is passive with them. Cats are an unknown.

We continue to learn about sweet Lena, who will be ready to travel to her home in mid to late March. Please consider this sweetheart of a Golden/Lab with a soft and gentle demeanor.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
