My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Spanky is a young boy that is very friendly and affectionate with everyone including other dogs and cats. He does however need someone who is willing to continue his training and socialization to help him become a confident companion. Spanky is a young dog approximately a year old and currently weighs 14 lbs.

Here is what his foster parent had to say:

Spanky is a very friendly and affectionate pet. He is the type of dog that will always put a smile on your face and be there to bring you up when you are sad. He is just full of love and is friendly to everyone including other dogs and cats. He is a young boy probably around a year old and in many ways he still looks and acts like a puppy including having that puppy energy.

It is my guess that Spanky has never lived in a home environment or had any formal training. He has never been taught house rules and I doubt he was ever anyone’s beloved pet. We have been working on his training and helping him learn what it means to be part of a loving family. I am happy to report that he has proved himself to be very intelligent and eager to learn.

He is not house trained but is in the process. Like any puppy he will steal food if given the chance and would probably get into other things if left unsupervised. He is however excellent in his crate. He goes in with no problem, and stays clean and quiet until you let him out. This has enabled us to use the crate as a training aid just as we would with any new puppy.

The other issue we are working on is his issue around being picked up too quickly and around his food where he can become possessive. He definitely needs someone who will continue to be consistent with him and patient in his training. We would suggest taking him to obedience school which would really improve his skills, teach him to trust, and would allow for closer bonding with his person.

Spanky loves to sit on your lap, and chasing a ball and playing with other dogs is his favourite things to do. He is a very quiet dog in the home and doesn’t appear to have any fear of anything. At this point I wouldn’t trust him not to dash out the front door if given a chance so caution should be taken in that regard. He is not leashed trained and will pull but because he is small, it is not that much of an issues but definitely more training in that regard would help.

Yes, this boy needs some work but it is not something I think with training can’t be overcome. In general he is wonderful company and a very loving pet. He is active but he also settles very easily so he would fit well into most situations.
