My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sorry but we are no longer accepting applications for Rocky.

When we rescued Rocky he was just a little ragamuffin of a dog. It was hard to see what he actually looked like but once our groomer Nici did her magic, we had a very handsome little dog! He is a real sweetheart. He is a little guy just over 15 lbs (a bit of a fatty) and is approximately 3 – 4 years old.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

Rocky is a well mannered dog. He takes treats very gently from the hand. When he hears something unknown to him, he raises his ears and tilts his head in a very cute way. He loves affection as in back and tummy rubs. Rocky, is a timid dog and if approached too quickly, he will retreat. I believe he is going through a ‘where am I and is this my forever home?’. He is just not confident but ever so gentle.

Rocky didn’t know any commands when he first arrived but he definitely knows how to listen and follow whatever you want him to do. There are certain areas of the house he is not allowed in and I only had to tell him “no” once and he never tried to go in those areas again. He didn’t even understand the leash at first but now he loves going for walks and walks nicely at my side. He was afraid of the crate at first but now he knows that at bedtime or when we leave the house, he goes in there. In his forever home he probably wouldn’t need to be crated at all as he doesn’t get into anything even when we left bits of ham on the coffee table. When I am going out the door he waits patiently until I tell him to come. He was unable to maneuver the stairs but we have been working on it and he is much better now and can do our shorter stairs. He seems to be very in-tune to what you want of him and always willing to respond accordingly. He has never had an accident in the house but doesn’t ask to go out either. We just keep him on a regular schedule and he seems to do fine.

Rocky seems to be in excellent physical condition. Shiny coat, he has a prance type of walk. His nails were so long when he first arrived that he could barely walk without pain. He appears to be non-shedding, non-allergic dog. In the house he is very quiet and lays down a lot. He doesn’t seem to know yet what toys are for. Outside, he seems more excited and loves to chase squirrels. He loves going for rides in the car.

He has only been in contact with strangers and children while on morning walks and on a leash. He allowed pats on the head with no hesitation. I think if any stranger approached him with respect and took the time, Rocky would be just fine. He has never shown one iota of any aggressive behaviours to anyone. He is a very gentle, loving little boy. He has no interest in cats but enjoys the company of other dogs and looks to them for cues. (Experienced prior to my fostering him).

I would like to see him in a home that has had dogs before so they would have patience with him. He is very smart, fast learner, but needs time. I would recommend a home with only adults or with older children, since younger children might be too fast for his initial shyness.
