My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Apollo has a unique appearance and personality plus. He is still very much a puppy and is currently in love with the world. He is coming along really well with his training. He is very food motivated which makes it much easier. He would however be a great candidate for obedience school. Overall he is a very friendly boy who just needs an outlet for his energy and desire to play. He would make a great family pet. We would guess his age to be somewhere around a year old and he currently weighs 20 lbs.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

Apollo has been such a fun house guest. He is a unique looking little dog with interesting markings. I love that he has one single white paw and that his coat is a bit wiry. He is a sturdy little dog with a fantastic, charismatic personality. He is snuggly and charming and is a bit of a “good time Charlie”. He is a wee firecracker! Although he is currently being crated at night at our house, he would happily snuggle up at the foot of the bed. He is a snuggly-kissy face kind of pup when he settles down. My husband and I think that if someone were to throw the ball for him all day, he might just keep bringing it back for just one last throw. He is very low shedding and is a healthy boy.

Apollo is a very sweet, loving little dog. He loves to give and receive affection. He was not shy or nervous when coming to our home and has been friendly and agreeable with everyone he has met both at our house and outside when meeting strangers. He has the potential to be a fantastic, loyal pet and friend.

He is very sociable and friendly. He has not encountered children as of yet. He is good with other dogs but because he is very playful, he is most compatible with another dog with similar energy as he could be overwhelming to a dog that is more mellow. We have two dogs. He loves them. They would love him more if he were a bit more relaxed. He wants to PLAY PLAY AND PLAY SOME MORE. He doesn’t understand when the other dogs let him know that they have had enough and he can become a bit of a nuisance to them at that point and I sometimes have to crate him until he calms down a bit. He really is still a puppy.

NO CATS. Although he only wants to play, he really wants to chase our cats. He does not understand that when they hiss and swipe at him, this means that they have had enough and he doesn’t back down. We have not had close encounters with other dogs on walks, but have seen some on the other side of the street. He pulls on his leash and wants to go and see them but that is it.

Apollo is crated when we are not home. He is relatively quiet in his crate. There may be some whining, but nothing serious and he settles down nicely. As far as I know this behavior is maintained when we are not here. I have hardly heard him bark. He is not a yappy dog at all.

We passed a fire truck that was en route the other day on our walk and he just about took me out wrapping his leash around my legs when it went by. It was loud and I think it scared him. He sometimes shrinks away from cars parked on the side of the road when we are out walking but otherwise he is fine on leash. As he came from a rural area he is just getting used to all the sights and sounds of city life so this will just take time as he encounters new experiences every day. He did have his first bath the other day. He did not like it.

His favourite thing is to PLAY, PLAY PLAY….and eat. He will fetch anything you throw for him and bring it back to you. He loves to play tug with his toys and he likes to chase the ball around. He is quite happy to entertain himself quietly by your feet if you aren’t really interested in playing with him and you give him a toy.

He has not chewed anything at our house that he shouldn’t, BUT…he has shown the tendency to want to chew. I bought him a good chew stick that he can take with him when he goes but the adopter should consider especially buying more toys of this nature for him to keep him from chewing things he shouldn’t.

He knows how to sit (selectively). He is learning to give (shake) his paw. He is food motivated and this is helpful in getting him to do things. He is house trained. He piddled in the house the first day he was here. He was immediately escorted outside and that was the end of that. Sometimes when he is really excited he will at times do a little tinkle but that will be eliminated as he ages and gets more used to family life.

He is being crated often. He does not like to be in his crate but does go reluctantly. He doesn’t make much fuss, but definitely does not go in because he wants to. He is crated during the day when we are at work, when he is a bit wound up so that he can calm down, and when we sleep at night he is crated in our room beside our bed. He is crated for about 6-8 hours when we are all at work, depending on the day.

He is learning how to properly walk on his leash. There has been improvement but he still needs significant work in this regard. He tries to go wherever you are going, so he might bolt out the door if you were going out of it and he was close by. He likes the car. He also likes to be in your lap so he needs either a seat belt or to be crated or else he will end up in the front seat with you. Of course further training will eliminate this as well.

Apollo is a good natured dog and I believe that with some good doggy leadership he will fit well into almost any living situation. He would be best suited to a home with NO CATS. He would do well with another play mate with energy to burn like he has. I also believe that, even though we have not encountered any children, they would make fast friends and be great playmates for one another. I think he needs a boy :)
