My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

**Belle is not currently with the Riley County Humane Society, she is a courtesy post for her owners. If you are interested in Belle please contact dog-coordinators@rchsks.org**

Belle is a 3 year old, 75 lb female shepherd/great dane mix. She is looking for a breed experienced home with no cats or chickens to chase. Belle is choosy about her canine friends but has adjusted well to living with her current much smaller canine sibling, after an adjustment period. Since her adoption from a shelter in December, she has become more confident, active and playful. She loves to play with the other dog in the home and with her stuffed squeaky toys. Belle loves to run outside and is extremely agile! She also can be a couch potato and enjoys long naps. She is calm and friendly around people and friendly towards kids (~12-14 year olds). She loves attention and being petted. Belle seems quite intelligent and is very responsive to verbal direction (i.e. "gentle", "off"). She doesn't bark in the house but has started to bark a little (not incessantly) when in the back yard.

Belle has good indoor manners but does not crate. She has done just fine being left out while her people are away. She can jump or climb out of her current yard, which includes a rock wall. We are not sure if she would stay in a 6 ft privacy fence but she should not be left alone in one at least initially in a new home. True to her breed, Belle can be protective of her people. She does need a firm owner willing to enforce proper boundaries and not let her make her own rules. Even though she is very well behaved, Belle would benefit from obedience or agility classes or any similar activity that engages her mind and rewards following her person's lead. Ideally she should go to a home where the kids are at least 12. Homes with younger children and breed experience may also be considered.
