Here's what the humans have to say about me:
"Hunter" is a stunning 3-yo (Feb 2017) neutered plush-coat black GSD who can best be described as a Gentle Giant. Hunter weighs in at close to 100 lbs, yet is not overweight; in fact, he's light on his feet and jumps into his owner's 4WD pickup from a standing start.
Hunter is friendly, outgoing, laid back and confident. He's well socialized with people and fine with visitors--but is still a good watchdog. He's great with kids of all ages, including his owner's 1-yo grandson.
Hunter was great with the several dogs he met at GSRSV's rescue ranch, which is a testament to his good temperament as he had not been around many other dogs previously. (See the video of Hunter with the other dogs elsewhere on this page.)
Hunter is not only good w/ cats, but livestock as well! His owner has sheep, and Hunter has never tried to go after them. He will chase after the resident cats if they run, but has never hurt them. In fact, the cats came two years after Hunter and the cats actually approached Hunter, sensing no threat from him.
Hunter has been kept as an outside dog primarily, but occasionally sleeps inside and has no problem "holding it." His owners say that Hunter loves being inside and if given a choice, would be a housedog. He's non-destructive both inside and outside. In fact, his owners leave their shoes outside and Hunter doesn't chew them up or run off with them--rare for a GSD!
Hunter is well-behaved and received a five-session group basic obedience course when he was 9 months old. If Hunter has one fault, it's that he does pull when on leash, but not really bad and if he had more on-leash time I have no doubt he'd improve rapidly. His off-leash recall is good w/ Hunter's "dad", but not so good w/ his "mom" (who babies him more). Hunter likes to go for car rides; he rides calmly in a crate in the back of his owner's pickup.
Hunter's owners purchased him as an 8-wk old pup. Though they keep him outside, Hunter is obviously very much loved by his family. However, both of his owners work full time, and his "dad" is sometimes gone for days. They do not have a very large fenced area, and it's hard for Hunter's mom to keep him from wandering in the unfenced area where their livestock is. Wanting the best for their dog, they are seeking a new home for him (which will be somebody's big gain).
GSRSV has evaluated Hunter and is placing him as a "Program Dog." This means that GSRSV is placing Hunter through its adoption program while his owners continue to care for him.
Hunter is located in Elverta. His adoption fee is $260.
