INFO FROM FOSTER :
Skipper came to us through no fault of his own. Due to changing family circumstances, he finds himself looking for a new, loving home. He has been in foster care for two weeks and we have really seen big changes in his personality.

Personality: Skip is very sweet, playful, smart and really enjoys being with his family. Occasionally he can be timid and nervous, but we have found a calm voice and 'let's go', gets him back on his feet with a confident tail wagging. Over time, once he gets comfortable, he will increase his confidence as we have seen a remarkable difference in such a short period of time. He enjoys learning new tricks and was quick to learn sit, stay, come. He also enjoys standing/walking on his two back legs and enjoys spinning, walking forward, backward, etc. He is a bit of a clown and brings lots of giggles whenever he 'walks' into the room. We are still working on a few more commands...but, he is always willing and happy to be challenged.

People/ Strangers and Kids: He has adapted to both male and females in the house and the older, respectful children as well. He will give a few barks at new people who enter the house initially, but by making new people a positive experience by giving choice treats, he has learned quickly that new people are ok. More emphasis on positive training will help bring him more confidence with new visitors. Once in, however, he is quite welcoming and will approach new comers with ease. On walks, he will bark at people approaching but will not fuss if we stop to chat. We are working on helping him be more respectful to approaching people while on the leash. More positive reinforcement will help him.

Interaction with Packmates - dogs and cats: He interacts with cats well (basically ignoring them). For dogs he needs a small amount of time to warm up to, as with new visitors but he has not shown any negative behaviour towards other dogs. He has interacts well with a smaller, similar personality dog in the house without any issue. Similar sized visiting dogs came to the house and he so enjoyed playing with them once they got to know each other.

Energy Level: Skip is a medium energy dog. He does enjoy a fast run inside and outside, but also enjoys loves to settle down for a nap during the day. He has even been spotted falling asleep sitting up!

House Rules: Skipper is completely house trained and will tell you (with absolute certainty) he needs to go outside. He will come to you and mumble and shuffle his legs like he is dancing and when you stop giggling (because it is quite cute) and say, 'outside', he runs to the door. No prompting was necessary with him to be completely house trained. He has been very respectful the house. He has not chewed or otherwise damaged anything. He enjoys sitting by you and often he will sit nice and tall looking at you from a distance almost asking to come over. He has not done too much jumping on the furniture and actually needs to be coaxed into joining us on the couch. Each day, however, he enjoys a little snuggle as we watch TV. Everyday he feels more and more comfortable and the time he spends on the couch increases by the day.

He really enjoys walking and reminds you when it is time. (again...the charming mumble and shuffle). No need to set a clock, he loves to get outside as many times as he can. He walks well on the leash. He does need some prompting to remain at your side without too much pulling but, overall, he is good.

Toys: He really does enjoy anything that squeaks or rolls. At first, he didn't seem interested, but now he has turned into a playful little pup. He loves to chase toys as well, and will sometimes bring it back to you. Another skill we are working on.

Crating: We have started crate training with Skip. He will now eat his meals in his crate (door closed) and will sleep in his crate (door open) throughout the day. He is beginning to independently go to the crate for meal times. We are working on increasing his comfort for longer periods of time in the crate. At night he sleeps on a dog bed on the floor and he seems to prefer that. He settles right down and sleeps through the night.

Food: Skip is a slow, gentle eater. He does need more time to eat his food than the other dogs. We have been feeding twice a day and he is getting more comfortable with eating all of his food in these two sittings. Being alone in his crate to eat helps keep the other dog away that might get him nervous. He does eat better when you sit nearby but we have been slowly decreasing the time that we sit nearby to increase his independence.

Likes: Loves walks, playing training games, chasing balls, squeezing a squeaky toy, sitting near you. He also loves to have a 'hug' several times a day. He comes and sits at our feet. We say 'hug' and he begins to lift up so that we can pick him up for a cuddle. (he is like a little koala) He will also rest his head on your shoulder. So sweet!

Dislikes/Fears: Skip is not a big fan of driving in cars. He is quite apprehensive in the car, both in and out of a crate. More experience with quick fun trips might increase his confidence.
Loud, stern voices also make Skip lower his body and cower. Positive reinforcement will go a long way with this pup!

Grooming: Skip has a lovely soft, curly coat that will need regular grooming but, he does not shed. He is quite happy to allow you to brush and groom him if you choose and will lay on his back thoroughly enjoying the treatment.

Current Routine: We are home most of the day. Dogs are fed twice a day, morning (6am) and dinner (6pm). They are walked 3x per day - morning, afternoon and evening. He will ask to go outside and has been consistent.

Ideal Home: Ideally, Skip's new family should be home most of the day. He does love the attention and loves to be with his family. An active family who enjoys to get out for at least a few good walks a day would make this little active guy happy. Continuing his training will also increase his confidence and help keep his mind active. He is really a quick learner and so willing to give anything a try. Another dog in the family is not a must, but it would definitely be company and a companion for him especially if they have a similar personality. Smaller children may not be a good match for Skip. Their quick movements and inability to read him might make him feel uneasy. Skip will make such a great addition to a family who will appreciate his love of the outdoors, his enthusiasm for play, his goofy antics (walking/bouncing around the house) and his daily 'koala hugs'!

We welcome your application for consideration .
