My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sammy: 6-year-old female chocolate Lab mix 60 lbs

Sammy’s owner had to sadly surrender her to the county shelter due to sudden change in living situations… through no fault of Sammy. Shell-shocked from this stressful change, the shelter immediately contacted us and we were delighted to take this lady into our program. Sammy, no doubt, misses her former owner, with whom she’d spent nearly her entire life… but she is now eager to find her new forever home.

What Sammy’s foster says: An absolute darling now… but Sammy was frightened out of her wits when she first arrived in our home several days ago. Skittish, scared, anxious, fearful, uncertain – tail tucked between her legs, cowering, peeing on the floor. She retreated to the safety of her crate where she remained… Slowly but surely she has come out of her funk. Now her tail wags, she prances around, and she eagerly seeks affection. She loves going on walks and is slowly getting used to her easy-walk harness, but still pulls on leash. A bit anxious and whiny when she sees other unfamiliar dogs on walks – most likely due to past under-socialization with other dogs. She is still learning her place in her foster pack but is showing her true wonderful colors. Gets along great with our own big black lab Diesel. We’ve discovered that she loves to fetch balls and quickly drops them for you to throw again. In fact, we think Sammy might have some border collie in her due to some of her mannerisms (and her smarts).

What Sammy’s Rescue Rep says: Sammy is spayed, microchipped, and current on her vaccinations. Crate-trained but not-entirely house-trained. She wil urinate when stressed. Sleeps throughout the entire night in her crate without a peep. Sammy would best thrive in a quiet home. Great dog for older folks. The presence of another dog would be a plus to help her acclimatize. Likely not good with cats. Her former owner advises that he purchased Sammy when she was very young, and she had already been physically abused by her original owner when she was very young – this explains her current state of mind. Sammy will be a long-term project to increase her sense of security and safety – but she is worth every bit of that investment. Sammy is located in Berkeley

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
