My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog. ?

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program. ?

Let me introduce you to Rex, an adorable, approximately 1 year old Tibetan Spaniel/ ShihTzu mix. He is a small and very energetic dog with a sweet personality. Although small; he’s approx.. 20lbs, Rex is not content to be carried around and prefers to travel on his own steam. Little Rex is a young, busy dog and although not a huge cuddler right now, he is affectionate and likes to be close and is always following you around. He is an excellent partner and friend and would be a great companion for an active person or family.

Rex was picked up as a stray by a rural animal control facility and wasn’t claimed. He has the opportunity now to find his forever family. Rex deserves a family who is as devoted to his as he will be to them. He needs to belong in a home where he will not be allowed to roam free and be safe, and where he can be confident in that fact that he is home forever and will never be lost or abandoned again. When we took Rex in he had such severe ear infections in both ears that he needed to see a dermatologist to determine the treatment path required. In his young life he had been neglected so severely that his ear canals were swollen shut with chronic ear infections that had been left untreated. We weren’t seeing the improvement we were hoping for with initial medications so off to the specialist we went, fearing that surgery was going to be required. We received good news from the dermatologist that Rex could be treated with a combination of different medications and a specific kangaroo and sweet potato dog food as it was determined that his ear infections were allergy based. He has been doing quite well with the treatment plan and he is on the road to a full recovery. Anyone interested in Rex will have to be prepared to keep him on the food that he is on, it is available through veterinarians (Rayne Kangaroo), and will have to stay on top of his ears, monitoring them and keeping them clean, ensuring that should they show signs of infection that he receives treatment so that he is never, ever in the situation again that we found him in. Rex requires good care and people that will keep his ears in good condition. Now that he is on the allergy food we expect that his ear infections will significantly lessen, but a floppy eared dog like Rex will always be at greater risk of ear infections due to less air flow in the ear canal.

Rex enjoys all forms of exercise offered him and he requires daily walking and activity. He could even be a running partner if that is what you enjoy. Even though he has little legs, they carry him well and he can keep up. Without regular exercise, a dog tends to get into mischief. Rex is a normal young dog that is full of energy. He does well with at least two walks a day no matter what the weather. He is a rugged little dog, even though he looks like a delicate fluffball! He loves all toys but balls are his favourite. Rex loves to play and needs to be played with every day to be happy. He is great in the car and loves adventure so he would love to come with you on trips, long or short, and discover new areas to explore.

Rex is house trained and will give you a sign that he needs to go out. Of course, as with any dog, his housebreaking is only as good as his supervision. Rex is also crate trained and sleeps in his crate at night and when alone in the house. Rex does voice his displeasure by whining and barking when left alone so he is better suited for a house. He is not a suitable apartment or condo dog or other attached housing. He will also do better in a home where someone is home more often than not. He will not be happy being left for a long work day. We would be looking for a home for Rex with someone that either works from home, or has someone home more of the day than not, or young retirees that are active and enjoy getting out for fast paced walks and hikes. Rex would love a secure fenced in yard to run around and play in and what better spot to chase after his beloved ball!

We are still in disbelief that such a beautiful and lovable dog was abandoned. Rex is good with other dogs and has settled in nicely with his foster dog siblings. He loves to play with them and is always on the go. He would do well in a home with another friendly, well behaved dog. We would ideally be looking for a home for Rex that has another dog that enjoys to run and play and then cuddle up on a dog bed after. Rex would not do well with an older dog or one that doesn’t enjoy play as he is still very young and he will pester them. He really needs a willing playmate Playing with another dog is an excellent way for Rex to get out his energy and have a great time. He will need a family willing to devote the time to make sure that he is properly socialized and trained. His foster family has been taking him out for walks, to pet stores, and in the car with them to show him the world around him. It was very apparent that his previous family didn’t take him to too many places as Rex can initially be shy when he goes to new places, having never experienced them before, but his outgoing personality always shines through and he soon is ready to explore.

Rex is also good with his two foster cats and pretty much ignores them. He will be prone to chasing a cat that runs from him though so if there is a cat in the home it needs to be one that is relaxed around dogs and knows how to behave properly around a dog. Rex is not being fostered in a home with children and we believe that with his loving nature, he would do fine with older children (over 12yrs) that have been educated on how to treat smaller dogs. We are not looking for a home for Rex that has small children.

Rex has been taught basic obedience and knows "sit", “lie down” and “time for bed” Rex's new family should commit to continuing his obedience training to bring out the best in this very smart dog. In the end you will have a fantastic little dog that has all the love in the world to give. Rex is very smart and learns new tricks and skills quickly so he will do very well at dog school. Plus, he’s bound to make some new friends there! He is a social dude!

Dogs are very cute and hard to resist but they do require a lot of time commitment and are not for everyone. Rex’s rough start has not held his back from loving life and being a happy, affectionate boy. He is looking for a forever home to share his life with. If you are looking for a small dog that is independent, super sweet and highly trainable, Rex may just be the perfect one for you! Please research his breeds as Tibetan Spaniels are not an overly well known dog. He definitely takes over more of the Tibetan Spaniel personality and energy level. They are known to be a lively dog that loves to play and this is describes Rex perfectly. Rex is not a lie by the fireside type of dog, he is active and wants to be busy. He would be ideal for anyone interested in dog sports or activities as he is very smart and athletic. He requires people willing to work with him and play with him and invest in his training. He will be a fantastic dog and very best friend to someone looking for an active, friendly, playful dog in a small, fluffy, (Rex says manly) size.
