My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What a cutie, right? Meet Coffee!! This 2-3 year old guy is so adorable and easy to love but he needs a special home. Coffee came from an animal shelter with two other Dobies, one male and one female. They were in rough shape both physically and mentally, covered in wounds and avoiding human contact as much as possible. Eventually we chose to separate them and paired them with dogs that were more compatible. Coffee is a classic example of a dog that didn't get enough proper socialization as he was growing up and certainly no training. He is smart though and a willing learner but it takes patience and gentle movements. He is doing fantastic with crate training, knows which one is his and gladly goes in it to rest. He doesn't have much experience in a house so the crate is proving to be the perfect tool to introduce him to to being inside without giving him the opportunity to get himself in trouble. The leash was also a major difficulty for Coffee and it was quite the debacle the first couple of walks. He now walks quite nicely with minimal resistance but the world is still a scary place for him so he will need a handler that get him over those hurdles. Coffee is actually a pretty sweet guy though and seems to genuinely enjoy attention once he trusts his person. He is also pretty dog social but he can be overwhelming for some other dogs (especially older ones) so he has to learn to respect that other dogs have boundaries. A larger, playful female dog would be the ideal companion but the right male isn't out of the question. Last, but not least, Coffee has some pretty old fractures that can make him walk a little bit funny. The doctors were unsure if they were caused by trauma or possibly the result of HOD (google hypertrophic osteodystrophy) when he was a puppy. Either way, he may never be a marathon runner but he can easily handle walks and other activities just like any other dog. Coffee is in a foster home in Southern California but he can be at the rescue in Fillmore, ca most Saturdays upon request.
