My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

03-23-17 PePe is a happy, funny, goofy, loving, snuggler who manages to worm his way into the hearts of everyone he meets. Even "large dog only people" find themselves falling for this teeny Pug mix.

Life has not been easy for PePe. Our paths crossed with him at a county pound where he was on "rescue group only" status due to an obvious leg injury and evidence of some old injury that left him with a "reverse mohawk" along his back. Turns out the leg injury was actually a condition he was born with, and that no one ever addressed in his two years on this planet. The injury to his back is a mystery as to its cause, but according to all the vet personnel who have met him, it is the result of some sort of trauma that does not affect his function. It has, however, left him with a bald stripe and a sporadic white stripe which earned him his name...like the cartoon skunk.

PePe has had the rather intensive orthopedic surgery needed to fix his hip issue, and thankfully the prognosis for a full and happy life is good. The only catch is that for at least six more weeks PePe is on "restriction" which limits his ability to play and act like the goofball he is. With each passing week he will earn a bit more freedom, but we want all potential adopters to know that he will require commitment, attention to detail, and a human with a thick skin when he tries to guilt you into letting him do more than he is allowed....those sad eyes and occasional desperate whines can sucker in the faint of heart. PePe is not on board with being as calm as he needs to be when left to his own devices, so crating, baby-gating and leash walking will be omnipresent in your life for those six plus weeks. Even though he enjoys down down and good nap, he is only two after all, so he does try to get energetic.

PePe is in a medical foster home who can give you all the details of his restrictions, and the how-to's for managing his needs and keeping him happy as you get him through to the other side. Should you be the problem-solving, multi-tasking, attentive person for the job, your reward will be a life with one of the coolest little fur balls we have ever met. Once PePe gets through this restriction period, the only long term factor that the vets expect is the development of some arthritis in that leg...but seriously, isn't that in the cards for most of us?

PePe currently lives with two very big dogs that are completely befuddled, but intrigued, by his silly noises and constant happiness. At first, PePe was reactive to the big dogs out of a perceived (and unfounded) fear for his life, but once safely introduced and integrated into the foster family, he is very friendly and playful with the big dogs. Being as tiny as he is (10.3 pounds), this needs to be kept in mind forever as he makes new, bigger, friends of all species.

PePe is heart worm negative and on prevention, has had all of his vaccines and will be neutered soon.
