My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Handsome, sweet natured, friendly, fun, intelligent, social and an all around great family pet. Ronin is all these things and more. He is a young boy at just a year and a half but already he is doing so well learning commands, making friends and hopefully on his way to finding a perfect new family. Ronin currently weighs approximately 55 lbs.

Here is what his foster mom had to say:

Ronin is a sweet boy. He loves to catch a ball mid-air, and being tucked under the covers–nose and all! He’s ready to be somebody’s best friend. He may be a young dog, but he is much calmer than any young dog I’ve ever met. He has a puppy curiosity, but not a puppy’s energy. He likes to learn new things, and wants to be involved in everything you’re doing. His energy level I would call moderate. He loves to have a good play, but then he loves to settle down for cuddle time. Ronin appears to be very healthy and has a glossy black coat that sheds very little.

Ronin is so sweet and gentle, but still has a playful spirit. It’s the perfect combination. One thing that is very special about Ronin are his ears. They are floppy and glossy and are the softest things I’ve ever felt!

Ronin has not been exposed to children, but he is very calm and sweet, and does not use his mouth for anything but eating. He also plays very gently. I feel confident that he would be a very good companion for children. He has not shown any aggression whatsoever and doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He is curious and friendly to everyone he meets. Ronin is very good with dogs, if a little bit timid. He would do well with another dog that is patient and not too aggressive, or as the only dog in a home. He is not good with cats.

Ronin has a hound howl, and he does not like to be left in his crate for very long. He gets anxious whenever anybody leaves, he whimpers and paces by the door. But he does calm down and has exhibited no destructive behaviour. While playing, Ronin got hit in the head with a flying frisbee, and now he shies away whenever there is a frisbee out during playtime. He is a sensitive boy, and will need someone to show him that he is safe, but he recovers from a fright quickly. His curiosity overcomes any fears he has very quickly.

Ronin’s absolute favourite thing to do is get tucked in with you! He will nuzzle his way under your covers, under your legs, under your book…. anything to get to that toasty warmth and coziness that he enjoys with his people. When out playing he loves to catch the ball mid-air. He takes flying leaps that are very impressive, even if they aren’t always successful. Ronin is very quiet for the most part. He barks and howls at the cat, and barks when he is ready to be let back in from the yard.

Ronin has a true hound nose. Whatever you are doing, he shoves his nose right into it. He will try to counter surf when he can, and he looks at you with the saddest eyes when you are eating. But if you tell him a firm “no”, he does back off quite well. Otherwise he has really impeccable manners, and sits for a treat very nicely. He knows how to sit, but isn’t very consistent with it. If you have treats he suddenly becomes a top student! He needs work on recall and basic commands, but he is a very smart boy, and he generally understands what I’m trying to get him to do, even if we don’t always use the right words. He is very observant and learns quickly how to behave with you.

Ronin has been perfectly housetrained right from the start! He sleeps through the night without needing to go out, and is very good about standing at the back door when he wants to go out. He is not well crate trained, and that is mostly my fault. Since I work from home, I haven’t had many reasons to put him in his crate. But we feed him inside the crate twice a day and he goes in quite happily and only gets fussy to be let out when people are around and he feels left out. If crate training is important in the household he goes to I can’t imagine he will take much time to become accustomed. But because he is so well behaved in our home we have not felt that crate training is a priority.

Ronin will walk on leash, but he follows his hound nose very intensely. He requires many stops to sniff along the way, and will pull when there is a particularly interesting scent just out of his reach. He has not tried to escape or run away. He prefers to be close to you in the car, so he will often sneak into the front seat whenever he gets the chance. Once he is settled in the back seat he rides reasonably well.

Ronin will truly be great in any home. He would love to have children to play with, or other dogs. Or he could be a companion for a single person. As long as he is loved (and can be tucked under the covers with you!) he will be happy and would be a fantastic addition to any household.
