My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Penelope, an approximate 4-year-old Chihuahua mix. In Greek mythology, Penelope is Odysseus' wife, who patiently waited 20 years for his return. She too has been patiently waiting for her forever- home.

Penelope’s foster mom says she’s an amazing girl with so much potential; it’s just that shelter life has taken a bit of a toll and she needs a special person or couple with patience, compassion, and perseverance to continue her growth and rehabilitation.

Penelope can be one of the most loving and silly dogs once she learns to trust you. She craves affection and wants nothing more than to be a best friend and loyal companion. She adores spending time in the sun, curled up as a lap dog, getting belly rubs, snacking on chew sticks, and going outdoors. While she will happily join you for lazy time on the couch, she appreciates a bit of daily play time and exercise, too. She’s a quick learner and extremely eager to please. Need a buddy to alert you to strange noises around the house? She’s your gal! She has proven to be trustworthy while alone in other rooms, but since she can jump rather well and enjoys a bit of inspecting, crating her while out of house is best.

Likely due to past experiences, Penelope is fearful and submissive when she meets people. This means she may growl and bark in fear, as well as roll on her back in submission. She is house broken, however, the submissiveness means she may wet in fear until trust in the relationship is established. She seems more hesitant to warm up to men, but continues to work on becoming more comfortable with her foster dad. After three weeks, she still barks at him when he makes an appearance until she remembers he’s OK. However, she is already showing improvements in many areas.

An ideal match would be a low-key type of single adult or adult couple without children. She may sound the locator bark for a bit when crated since she doesn’t like when her people leave, but after living in a shelter, can you blame her? Penelope has done well around calm dogs on walks, so another dog in the house could be possible. She does not have food aggression. She may try to “cover up” her bone or toy if you try to take it but has never snapped. She currently has a strong aversion to children and loud sounds which could improve with continued therapy and socialization. Penelope is fast on her feet and loves being outdoors, so she needs be leashed or in a fenced-in yard that she can’t escape from.
