My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

~adoption fee applies, please email caarescue@gmail.com if serious about adoption~
My name is Mia and my story is a little long but if you have time to read it please do because it is important for me to find the right family to help me. I joined CAA Rescue in foster care after they received an urgent phone call about me from the Montreal SPCA . I was completely frozen there, shut down and would not move a muscle. Clearly I was absolutely beyond terrified. CAA Rescue volunteers clamored away the whole day to get me immediately into foster care where they hoped I would respond positively.
They set up a nice crate for me, with cozy blankets within a huge pen in the middle of the house so that I would be part of the action with the two other resident dogs but allowed my own personal space to adjust. Sadly I just hid in my crate silently for close to 24 hours, no eating, not drinking, not peeing and not pooing. Just frozen like a statue. So my foster mom decided she need to do a little more to engage me in daily actives. She began to take me outside on the leash to get me used to walks, she leaves the leash on me from time to time so that I get accustom to the feeling of it.
She got me squeaky ball toys and has been playing with me but I have to admit I do like those squeaky toys and if I could hog them all in my mouth at once I would but my foster mama is smart, whenever I get attached to one and start to guard it she pulls out another one and I am overwhelmed with “ANOTHER SQUEAKY TOY!!?!! WHAT KIND OF HEAVEN IS THIS?!”
She began to hand feed me so that I would learn that people hands are soft and gentle and caring and could be trusted to do nice things
I have learned that couch cuddle time is something I like a lot but it takes me a long time to build the confidence to jump up there to be with the humans.
I spent a week with a trainer to help me along and continue the work my awesome foster mom started and the trainer said, “It was like watching a gold fish, she is so quiet!” But we did discover that I can be easily enticed with sausages to do just about anything!
In my time with CAA Rescue I have learned that while I can live with other dogs I prefer them calmer and quieter, highly active dogs will just stress me out and I will hide in my crate quietly on my own reverting back to fear.
I am house trained, meaning to say if you bring me outside on regular intervals I will do my business there and not in your home but I won’t ask for the door.
I am not leash trained and have no basic obedience… it will be a while still before I can embark on that level of training but I do think I will get there
I will growl when frightened and pushed into situations that make me uncomfortable so I need a positive dedicated and experienced guardian who has a few tricks up their sleeves on how to redirect my fear and anxiety. I am by no means a happy puppy, in fact I am far from even knowing I am a dog. I wish I had the words to explain to my foster mama how much I appreciate her dedication to me and all that she has done and is doing to help me; I wish I could tell her what happened to me in words and how she can help me but I can’t and so I use my body and my eyes and my voice to let her know how I am feeling and you know what; she is one smart cookie because together we are making progress ever day even though some days seem like we have set backs
I am looking for a dedicated, experienced, very patient and loving family, which has a relatively quiet routine. I need a home that is willing to allow me to slowly explore the world, but who is willing to work with me to make me more confident. I need a home that understands that I am anxious about new things and can vocalise this anxiety by whining and growling and pacing (this usually only happens when there is a lot going on around me, if not I am very quiet). I will do best in a house where I can access the back yard (no apartments for me since the noises from neighbors will likely make me very anxious). I will likely never be a dog park kind of dog, I do however love to learn in the safety of my home, and am working on trying to get comfortable on a leash so one day I can take walks. In the meantime I really enjoy playing with balls and running after them in the house. I am now able to eat from my bowl, I tend to nibble multiple times a day, so best to leave my portion out for me (I am a tad voluptuous so must not overfeed me!). I am curious about the other small dogs in the house and would do fine in a home with small calmer dogs/cats.
I am not your average doggie and truly need someone special and remarkable to commit to me and to find all the positive ways out there to help me into the amazing canine citizen I can be

If you are considering in applying for Mia please consider that she is at this time in perfect health but considered a special needs dog and we absolutely will not consider any applications for adoption with people who are inexperienced or not home frequently to work with her. Mia is on the right path to growing into an amazing dog but she needs equally amazing people to be dedicated to her.
If you would like to meet Mia at her foster home in Rosemere please write to CAARescue@gmail.com we will ask you to complete an adoption application so that we can learn a little more about you and if you are a perfect fit for Mia we will make arrangements for you to meet him for potential adoption
