My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, I’m Shadow. I’m a Labrador mix with perky, expressive ears, a huge appetite for cuddling and exploring, and a big brain. I was born in a shelter, but have been living with the same owner from 5 months to 8.5 years, my current age. During that time, my owner worked from home, but her circumstances are changing; she’s out of the house more than she used to be. The problem is that I get extremely sad when I’m left alone and I howl and bark like crazy, disturbing neighbours and landlords. When I get left alone, I’ll find a shoe of the person I love most and cuddle up to it.

Finding me a new home is very difficult for my owner, because she knows how special I am. Maybe it’s my big brain, maybe it’s my interesting blend of mystery breeds, but I have a very unique personality. I have a way of expressing myself through my eyes that is almost human. I learn tricks quickly. I’m easy to train. I’m also braver than a lot of other dogs. I’ve been on multi-day hikes all over the province, climbing mountains and finding routes through rockslides other dogs wouldn’t touch.

My favourite activities are: sniffing around everywhere outside, walking, eating, or cuddling (definitely cuddling). I spend the vast majority of the time sleeping; when I’m home, I power down, and when I’m outside, I come alive. I must have some terrier blood, too, because I perk right up when I think there’s a chance to chase critters. When I get a special treat of meat, I’ll jump around like I’m dancing and try to avoid eating it for as long as possible. It’s just too good!

I’m a little on the reserved side with new people. I trust women more quickly than men. I like kids a lot, but if a group of them approaches me excitedly, I’ll get scared and run away.

I proudly think of myself as a guard dog and so sometimes I feel the need to growl when "strangers" approach whatever zone I have established as my territory with whatever people I have been spending time with. It’s also not unheard of for me to lunge and growl at dogs when I’m on leash, although the rest of my leash behaviour is good. Off-leash, growling at dogs is not generally a problem. However, once in a while, a dog will rub me the wrong way and I’ve been in a few fights that didn’t result in injuries. I’d probably do best with a firm owner who enjoys training and ensuring consistent behaviour from me. When my owner had a boyfriend with experience training dogs, I never lunged or growled. He was also 6’4” so I didn’t feel as strong a need to protect my female owner!

I’m healthy and very spry for my age. I’ve been given lots of exercise and regular vet care throughout my life. I have a lump or two on my side, but they’ve been tested and they are just lipomas, fatty deposits that are very common for Lab breeds.

If you want a wilderness buddy or someone to nap all day by your side, I’ll be the best friend you ever had.
