Here's what the humans have to say about me:
URGENT!! OWNERS PLAN TO SURRENDER AVA TO SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHELTER WED, MAY 3!!!
"Ava" is an approx 6-yo spayed female GSD who is sweet, self-assured and mellow. Ava is very friendly with strangers both away from home and at home. She is good with young children, including her owner's 2-yo nephew.
Ava is great with most dogs, and was very easy-going with the several dogs she met at GSRSV's rescue ranch. However, she appears to dislike small dogs. A Chihuahua came into her yard through the wrought iron fence, and Ava got ahold of it; fortunately, Ava let go of the dog without harming it when her owner intervened. It's possible that Ava went after the little dog simply because it came onto her territory, and that she might be OK with little dogs under other circumstances. However, she is very reactive on leash towards small dogs so to be safe, it would be best to not place Ava in a home with a small dog.
Ava is definitely NOT good with cats, as the two indoor/outdoor cats at her home have shunned going outside ever since Ava arrived--and stay high up inside.
Ava's owners have kept her outside since they brought her home in mid-April, so we can't say whether or not Ava is housetrained.
Ava walks well on leash, save for when she sees another dog--especially a small dog--at which time she becomes fairly worked up. She likes to go for car rides and is a good passenger.
Ava loves playing with toys--especially squeaky toys--but does not know how to play fetch.
Ava was found as a stray in South Sacramento in early April by a friend of her present owners. The man who found her tried to find her owner(s), but was unable to do so. After two weeks, he asked his friend Mohammed if he and his wife Mumtaz would like to adopt Ava, and they replied yes.
Unfortunately, Mohammed & Mumtaz's 10-yo son is very allergic to Ava, and has issues even though Ava is kept outside exclusively. Further, their cats are terrified of Ava and won't go outside now. So, they are seeking a new home for her.
GSRSV has evaluated Ava and is placing her as a "Program Dog." This means that GSRSV is placing Ava through its adoption program while her owners continue to care for her. Ava's adoption fee is $210.
