My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Batman is what we like to call a “bomb proof” dog. He is friendly with everyone, including children of all ages and if you have a wee ones that make a mess when eating, Batman would love to help clean the floor for you. He is a hound and although he has the nose for sniffing out treats, etc. he is actually a very quiet dog. He is just a total love-bug and will make an excellent kid and pet friendly, family pet. Batman is a young dog approximately 2 years old and currently weighs approximately 42 lbs.

Here is what Batman’s foster family had to say:

Batman is a fantastic dog. He loves attention and interacts with all people well. He is quiet and loving and enjoys interactions with friends and family. He is wonderfully gentle with children and responsive to corrections and encouragement. You will fall in love immediately with Batman — and he will give you constant attention and love.

Batman is SUPER friendly — he is so happy to meet new people. He will initially be apprehensive toward a stranger reaching out to pet him, however once he determines you to be a friendly person he will come back to you time and again for some loving. He has been exposed to children of all ages from babies (under 1) to teens and adjusts appropriately — excited to be active with older children and calm and gentle with younger kids. He is gentle when being fed a treat by hand and patient when getting his breakfast or dinner. We haven’t had a visitor yet who hasn’t commented on what a fantastic dog Batman is!

He appears to be very healthy, except he was underweight when he arrived but he is eating well and is now starting to put on weight. I’d categorize him as low energy, but he is happy to go outside and play, running with kids or going for walks, though he’s just as content to snuggle up and relax. He is quite content to curl up beside you, especially if you are willing to pet him. He doesn’t appear to shed much at all — after his first bath there was some shedding, but after we brushed him shedding seems to have tapered off to next to nothing.

Batman’s confidence seems to be growing everyday and he now responds to an encouraging voice by coming to us, and openly seeks petting and attention from everyone in the family as well as visitors. He can be a bit over eager when it comes to meeting other dogs but he just wants to play but probably not a good choice for someone with a more reserved dog in the home. He is friendly with our cat, though the cat has been aloof, limiting interaction opportunities.

Batman is left alone daily for the work/school day without any concerns. He has free run in the back part of the house while we are out, and the full house when we are home. He is always happy to see us return, and immediately looks for some petting, but he shows no anxiety when left. We have NOT experienced barking, accidents or destructive behaviours. He is an exceptionally quiet dog — the only noise we ever hear is the occasional whimper to remind you he wants to be in the same room as you are. Batman follows his nose — and that is about coffee table height so any food you leave at his level might become his treat of the day! We are working with him to not sniff out anything left behind and he continues to respond well to corrections. He hasn’t chewed anything inappropriately. We do see him try to make a “nest” in the yard (with leaves, grass and mulch) but haven’t observed any digging.

Batman hasn’t been trained to respond to any commands, but he is very responsive to an encouraging tone of voice so we expect he will do really well with a little training. He responds appropriately to a firm NO, so he is quite easy to correct. He is fully house trained. He has not had an accident, and was easily directed to do his business consistently in one part of the yard. We do not use a crate for Batman as there is no need.

Batman enjoys going for a walk — but he follows that hound nose!! His need to explore places and scents often means some tugging during the walk. We work with him to learn to keep pace as we walk and try to encourage him to keep pace with limited sniff stops. He is initially nervous in the car when he first gets in the car. I suspect he is worried that he might go somewhere that isn’t pleasant, but he relaxes over the drive and is growing a bit more comfortable as he discovers he returns home after a ride.

Batman would like nothing better than to sit beside you and be petted all day long. He enjoys carrying around stuffed toys and going for a walk — followed by some more petting!! He is a gentle loving dog looking for consistent affection. He has a great temperament and won’t need high energy attention. You will fall in love with Batman quickly!! He is super quiet and as content to snuggle up with you as he is to go for a walk.

An adopter that is looking to make Batman an integral part of the family will suit Batman well. He loves to be with his people, but has no trouble managing on his own for the work day. He will fit well in a family with kids as he is kind and gentle, and loves the attention (and any snacks they happen to drop). I think Batman could manage a home with other pets easily depending on how well the other pets accept him into the fold.
