My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

6/22/17 Foster Update: Joe Perry is now in a loving foster home in CT that he shares with two resident dogs. His foster mom is in love with this gentle soul and shared, "I can't see how anyone couldn't fall in love with this boy! He is sweet and loving and copes with his leg better than any person I have ever met. He is great with my two dogs and wants to do everything they do. He tires more easily, but after a short rest, he is ready to go again. He needs some encouragement at meal time but add a little cheese to his food, and he is ready to eat the whole dish. He loves treats, cheese, and ice cream. He also discovered popcorn when my husband dropped a piece."

Joe Joe is like a person with a disability that one may know. At first you may be taken back, but after a while you don’t even notice because you know the person or dog’s personality, and you love them for who they are inside, in Joe Joe's case, a gentle and sweet soul.

Joe Perry's Story: Animal hoarding almost always comes from a true love and concern for the animals. Hoarders typically have every intention of caring for or adopting out the animals they take in. Yet the nature of their disease makes it difficult for them to let go or provide the necessary attention the pets need. And thus was the situation that sweet Joe Perry came from, where numerous animals were found in less than ideal circumstances in an Alabama trailer park.

Joe Joe was found hiding under one of the trailers in the park. He is just as sweet as sugar, with tender brown eyes that melt your heart. Joe Joe is estimated to be about 1.5-2 years old and we believe he is a Golden/Lab mix. This sweet boy was born with an abnormality to his right rear leg. He has been seen by an orthopedic veterinarian who does not feel surgery is warranted. Instead, a corrective cast had been put on Joe Perry's leg to help correct the defect. Since having this corrective cast, he has been putting more weight on his leg and there has been a huge improvement from the time when he first arrived at our rescue. A new cast was put on his leg for a few weeks to help with the strengthening, and has been removed, prior to JP's arrival in the northeast. While Joe Perry may never run the Boston Marathon, we are hopeful that he will enjoy some casual walks with his adopter.

Joe Joe had been staying in a loving foster home in AL prior to coming to the northeast. His foster mom gushes when she talks about him. "I can tell you that he is absolutely one of the SWEETEST dogs ever, especially considering the situation he came from! He has bonded easily with me, but totally loves my 20 year old daughter and gets so excited when she comes to visit. He tolerates my 16 month old granddaughter pretty well; he will just look or move away from her if she bothers him. He is easily startled, but will simply leave the room to get somewhere quiet. He does NOT like to be isolated though. I tried to keep him in my laundry room but he would not have it and then my bedroom with no better luck. But as long as he has free roam of the house he is good. He is great with his potty habits and has no accidents in the house. He plays with toys a bit, more and more as time passes. He doesn't mind my cat, although my cat doesn't run from dogs, so he would do fine with a dog-savvy cat. I have 5 dogs of my own and he does well with them too. He is such a sweetheart. It's going to be hard to let him go. He is going make a great companion for someone very special!"

Joe Perry enjoys riding in the car and gets a B+ on his leash walking. He weighs in at about 50 lbs, has been neutered, brought up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. He is under treatment for heartworm and is now being fostered in CT. Joe Joe has the courage of a true survivor. He will not let his handicap keep him from being the spirited dog he is deep inside. He is truly a wonderful dog and is filled with love and affection that just radiates from his very being. We know that JP's adopter is out there and that that person is just as special as Joe Joe is! If your home can offer this boy a little extra TLC, apply today and let Joe Joe’s spirit fill your world!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
