My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jake (a.k.a Joyful Jake Chick Magnet) is a 6-1/2 year old Australian Shepherd who weighs about 55 pounds. He is intelligent, challenging, excitable, sensitive, and high anxiety. He needs a home with someone that has experience with Aussies or Border Collies. Jake will benefit from having a good pack leader. As with most Aussies, he is not a yard dog and he wants to be inside with his people. He generally gets along well with other dogs and goes to doggie day care. He lives with a cat without problem, he will chase cats, squirrels, and rabbits when outside. He has had only limited exposure to children and so we are recommending a home with no kids under 10 years old. Jake has decided that his job is to protect his house from the mailman, he barks and growls and is difficult to control he will protect you from the mail. He also barks when others come to the door, but his tail is wagging a mile a minute and he is very excited when people come in, spinning and jumping, he has trouble hearing commands to settle down. Jake’s new family should be prepared to work on some behavior modification with him, to help him change his response in these situations. On occasions Jake expresses his opinion with a series of barks and growls. We certainly anticipate that Jake will thrive with lots of exercise for his mind and body and a committed owner. Jake has participated in classes or drop-ins for Rally (has an AKC Novice Rally Title), Obedience, Agility and has done some sheep herding. He likes learning new things, especially if treats are involved. He needs some work on off-lead recalls when he is outside his yard. If he is to be left for a time in a fenced area, the fence needs to be 6 feet tall.
Jake needs a home where there is daily activity and attention. He would do best in a situation where he can spend most of the day with someone. He probably would enjoy being with another dog. Daily activities like walks or runs, playing Frisbee or ball, herding, or agility are important. Call Cindy 970-353-1385
