Ariel - hound/shepherd mix, best guess - medium - female/spayed - adult - 4-6 years of age -black, tan, and white plush coat with breeching
We are not sure what breeding components produced such a lovely dog as Ariel - with her nub of a tail we are guessing that she may have some Australian Shepherd mixed in with what is definitely hound. Ariel’s countenance is as beautiful as her looks - she is a calm and unassuming dog, and when she
engages her expression is radiant.
Foster care for Ariel has been a process of discovery for us and for Ariel. We have learned that she is a warm, kind, honest dog who does not presume in any way, but is hopeful. Ariel has learned that she is important, and that her sweetness and responsiveness are valued.
Ariel’s house manners are excellent. Since coming into foster care she has also learned any number of cues such as “sit”, “down”, “touch”, “paw”, “leave it”. Ariel’s joy in her own accomplishments is even more touching to us, as she came to us somewhat cautious, reserved and guarded - so to see her transform into a dog who is expectant has been a very rewarding experience for us.
Ariel recently partnered for a week with a trainer-in-training at the Pat Miller Academy, Peaceable Paws, and she won the hearts of the audience who attended her “graduation”, and witnessed her focus and willingness. Her shining eyes and earnest responsiveness were truly a joy to behold.
Ariel gets along famously with other dogs. While she is not a presumptuous dog, she greets new people openly and appropriately. She rides happily in a car, loading up with confidence and quickly settling. Her leash work is excellent, and she would be a wonderful hiking companion.
Ariel’s foster care provider, as well as the trainer with whom Ariel partnered, have also reported that during introductions to new experiences and animals (such as horses and pigs and cows) Ariel maintained her calm composure, and approached these experiences with trust and her reliably reasoned manner. We do not have enough information to say that Ariel would do well with cats, although she has been exposed to them in her foster home and done fine with the resident cats.
Ariel will do well in a home in which a positive, force-free approach and daily reassurance are in place - a home that is willing to continue to guide and draw her out. Hedgesville Hounds is also very grateful to relate that her adopter(s) will receive the training syllabus that was used by her training partner at the Pat Miller Academy, as well as a seven-week Basic Good Manners Class at Peaceable Paws (one night a week for seven weeks) an incredibly generous offer.
Moreover, Ariel’s new adopter will experience the reward of a dog whose desire to please and be of value and purpose is profound and sincere.
