My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Levi is a cross post. To adopt Levi, please contact Denise at Jefferson County Animal Control - 304-728-3289.

Levi - male/neutered - adult (6 -7 years of age) - Pitt bull mix - red and white short coat - 78 pounds

Levi arrived at a rural Animal Control in a fairly pitiable state of condition - an underweight stray with a patchy, flea-bitten coat and a crooked smile that was the result of a number of broken teeth. But there was something so remarkable about this dog - and it has brought great joy to humane workers to witness how Levi’s special nature continues to script his future.

Humane officers have now succeeded in filling in the blanks of Levi’s history, which is basically a story of neglect - a life of being chained out, and ultimate abandonment. But in Levi’s case, knowing his history only points up even more strongly what a special fellow he is, and what a force of love.

Levi’s shining eyes reveal a nature that is filled with trust and goodheartedness. His expressions have been described as imploring, rich and soulful, loving and joyful, grateful. It would be hard to find a face that lights up a room with more abject, happy sincerity than the face of Levi. His faithful, trusting countenance, and his patience throughout his time with Animal Control have captured the attention of sponsors who, although deployed overseas and as a result, they could not adopt Levi, did underwrite all of Levi’s vetting expenses, including his neuter, and all of his dental work. Levi is now fit as a fiddle, although his one remaining affliction, “happy tail” has been difficult to treat because Levi’s tail has not stopped wagging since he came into care.

Levi is abjectly grateful to live in a world that does not keep him chained. He delights in the softness of his own bed. And, above all, Levi revels in the opportunity to be touched - a deprivation that we don’t imagine adequately for dogs who are tied out, never able to experience the world they witness. Levi LOVES to be petted and hugged - he is a champion leaner and snuggler. He loves to meet new people and dogs, and offers himself to new encounters with openness and friendliness, and doubtless a sense of appreciation that has erased the loneliness of his early years. And his great happiness to be fed - and to know that he will always be fed - have made Levi a joy to teach - he is very food and treat motivated.

Levi will embrace learning the behaviors that accompany living in a home - and he will be an eager and ardent student for his committed adopters. Our experience with dogs who have been tied out is that they learn house training and other nuanced behaviors very quickly once they are finally in a home environment, and are offered routines and predictable turnouts and walks. Already Levi has mastered cues that came easily in a shelter environment - like “sit” and “shake”, and he is working on his leash training.

Levi is quiet, and loves to travel in car. He welcomes bathing, and even visits to the vet. He is very proud of his recent accomplishment, which is catching a ball. In fact, Levi adores playing ball.

There is nothing that is remotely pitiable about Levi. Instead, there is something that is touchingly affirming about a dog whose being is so decidedly kind and honest, responsive and loving. Levi’s nature is a lesson of faith that will reward his adopters with a life long
bond.
