My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Barney is a ten year old, 13 pound, cream and white Shih Tzu. Barney is a great guy. He had one loving owner for all of his life until she recently had to move to a nursing home, and Barney could not go with her. He transitioned through several homes in a short period of time before coming into our rescue. He grew anxious and fear aggressive during that time, probably from missing his owner, being in strange surroundings, and there being no stability in his life. He is becoming less fearful in his foster home, but he not entirely comfortable with being unexpectedly touched, or he may nip. He is getting less anxious and the best approach is to allow him to settle and wait for him to come to you for attention. When he came into rescue, he was suffering from allergies, bacterial and yeast infections on his face, and ear infections, which also contributed to his not wanting to be touched. His allergies are now under control by medication and the infections have cleared with treatment, and he is quite healthy now. He is currently taking one pill a day for his skin allergies, and may need to take the medication year round or it may be seasonal.

Barney loves to play outside and go for walks with his foster mom and two Shih Tzu foster siblings. He isn't bothered by people or other dogs on the walks, and if someone approaches to pet him he often allows it without any trouble. But his foster mom always advises strangers to proceed slowly and with caution to allow Barney to be comfortable with being touched. His adopter(s) will need to understand fear aggression in dogs and continue reinforcing his training for his anxiety with being touched. In spite of some of his fears, Barney is a joy to have, and he sleeps in bed with his foster family and travels well. He is a sweet, fun-loving boy who wants to always be close by and is a constant shadow to his foster mom, who he will not allow out of his sight for a moment.

The ideal home for Barney would be a quiet home where someone is home most of the day and one without a lot of people coming and going. His new family must understand how to calm an anxious dog like Barney by letting him be and allowing him to adjust to them at his pace.

Barney is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventive. His adoption fee is $120.00 plus $8.73 sales tax for a total of $128.73. His foster family would like his adopters to live within the Twin Cities and hope that they will come to the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September every year.

To meet Barney, please complete an adoption application. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Minnetonka Petco near Ridgedale the first Saturday of every month.
