CoCo has unique needs and will require knowledgeable owners to continue the progress and maintain CoCo’s improved behavior and give him the exercise and attention he needs to be happy. We have successfully completed about nine months of clicker training and Coco has learned a lot of skills that you can enjoy with him.
CoCo loves going for walks but is sometimes wary when he encounters strangers and other dogs and may bark or growl. He loves fetching his squeaky toys and plays all kinds of games and has been trained in a number of behaviors, including sit, wait, lie down and settle, come and touch to hand, get on a scale to be weighed, get in a box, etc. He is excited to see his main humans and becomes quite playful for an adult dog. He is still working on polite walking and limiting barking and reactivity when someone comes to the door.
CoCo has taken his role as protector pretty seriously and would be a terrific watch dog, especially on the appropriate rural property. Right now new humans in his life need to bring treats, patience, and a tolerance for some forceful barking and posturing.
CoCo has been good with kids but we would not recommend a home with small children. We have not socialized CoCo with cats. The Hawaiin adoption folks’ notes stated that he is good with people, good with other dogs, but not good with cats. We have observed that although he seems OK with most other dogs, some care must be taken when they first meet.
