My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ABOUT EVE - TAKE MY LEAD DOG
Meet Eve. Full of love, Eve and her elderly owner must part ways.

Outside of our normal mission, please take a moment to read Eve's story, and why we were compelled to do what we could to help Eve and her owner. After this sweet man contacted a local shelter, they gave him Mama's name, as one of the things she does in our family business is evaluate dogs for shelters. Eve's owner wanted to find out her chances of making it to the adoption floor at the shelter, before he considered surrendering her to one. Unfortunately, after his girlfriend recently passed away, he will be moving into an assisted living facility in mid-July.

On Sunday, Eve and Tom met with our lead trainer, and what she found was a happy, affectionate, dog social, eight-year-old pit bull. Eve's assessment was a breeze, and we sat down with Tom to discuss options. After hearing more about his circumstances, we felt we must try to keep this dog out of a shelter and to empower this gentleman with the help he needed to be able to safely rehome Eve, with someone he felt comfortable, prior to his move.

But it seems just as we were compelled to help, at the very same time so were some others!

Handsome Dan's Rescue will be paying for Eve to have a dental, which has been scheduled for July 7. We think it best to get that much needed procedure out of the way and have her recover with her owner where she is most comfortable. We have listed Eve on our website, and hope that you will help us share her story.

We contacted the dog daycare where Eve has gone since 2011, Off the Leash, and they surprised us with the offer to board Eve at no change if she has not found a home before her owner must move into assisted living!

While we know that losing each other will be difficult for Eve and Tom, we are hopeful that we can ease this in a small way by giving him piece of mind from knowing his girl will be loved almost as much as she would be had they stayed together.

Should you have space in your home for Eve, please fill out an application at handsomedansrescue.org. We would like Eve to remain in Southern New England. Eve and her new adopter will receive free tuition in Outbound Hounds Pits and Pals Class through our Take My Lead Program.

For questions about Eve, please email our volunteer Kerry at kerrymccallyoga@gmail.com. Thank you.
