My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

This pretty girl is Sheba and she is a 2yr old female German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix who is looking for her forever home. Sheba is a solid girl, weighing about 75 lbs of happiness and love. Sheba came to us from a rural pound where she was left when her previous owner could no longer keep her. When we took her out of the kennel to assess her and she rolled over for a belly rub we knew she was coming home with us. Sheba has never met a stranger; everyone she meets is just a new friend she hasn’t met yet.

Sheba is house trained and crate trained. She has some basic obedience skills and is continuing her learning in her foster home. She is a very smart girl and picks up skills quickly. Sheba is food motivated so we use this along with praise to reward her. She loves learning new skills! Sheba had no leash training when we got her so we started her on a Gentle Leader head halter and it made all the difference in the world for her pulling. Walking Sheba is now a joy and super easy. She walks beautifully at your side with her Gentle Leader on. Anyone interested in Sheba will need to be committed to continuing her training at obedience school so that she can be the very best dog she can be.

Sheba is a moderate energy dog who does well with a good walk or 2 a day and some yard play time. She is not high energy and settles nicely after a good walk. Sheba is a very happy, enthusiastic dog though and can get over excited easily. She just hasn’t reached her maturity yet and has a lot of puppy behaviours still, but in a big dog body. She needs a calm home with a family who understands that gregarious, happy dogs need no added excited stimulation or else they become overly jumpy and excited. We use calm praise with her rather than excited praise, and we don’t encourage excited behaviour with her, asking visitors to greet her calmly. No high pitched voices please even though we know she’s so pretty!! Although she is so friendly and would be a great dog to greet children on walks, we are looking for a home for her with no small children. Homes with kids over 12yrs of age will be more suitable. The running and excited play noises of young children will be too much stimulation for Sheba. She will want to get involved and is just too large and solid of a dog and may inadvertently knock over or jump on the children. Sheba is such a lovely dog and will mature into a calm dog; she just has to grow up. But for now, we love the remaining puppyish antics and joy for life she retains.
Sheba is living in a foster home with other dogs and cats. She likes other dogs and plays well with dogs she knows and has had proper introduction to. She would be fine to go to a home with a calm and settled dog, but we wouldn’t want her to go to a home with another energetic or excitable dog. Sheba would be best as the only dog in the home and get all of the focus and attention from her people. She would like to have dog friends to go on walks with and socialize with though. Sheba is good with the cats in her foster home, but these cats are well adjusted to dogs and don’t react to dogs. Our cats ignore Sheba and in return she ignores them. We will only consider a home that has a cat in it if the cat is well adjusted to dogs and knows how to behave properly with a dog in the home. Any cat that reacts by hissing, swatting or running will entice Sheba to chase and get excited and this won’t be a good fit.

Sheba is extremely affectionate and loves any and all attention given to her. She considers herself a lap dog and if you sit on the floor you can be assured she will be on top of you trying to sit on your lap. She loves pets and cuddles and hugs and she is a world class leg leaner. She will lean her whole body against your legs as you pet her and often ends up falling to the floor for a belly rub. She isn’t allowed on the furniture in her foster home although she does try every once in a while to creep up. She thinks she is subtle about it, but 75lbs of furry body doesn’t go unnoticed! Sheba is so friendly that she greets all visitors with happiness and lots of kisses and leans. She hasn’t figured out that both German Shepherd’s and Rottweilers are guardian breeds. Visitors will need to be ok with a very enthusiastic greeting from a big and sturdy dog.

Sheba does ok in the car and is getting better with every car ride she goes on. She was initially anxious in the car and would bounce from window to window panting. We tether her in the car now to keep her settled and she is calming down during the ride now. Continued car ride exposure will get her to be more and more comfortable with car travel. Nicely though she doesn’t throw up. Sheba has shown no fears to thunder or anything else while in foster care. She is an easy dog to live with. She will follow you around and be your shadow wherever you go. She settles on the floor when you are watching TV or reading but is always within sight of you. Sheba is extremely loyal and will be a dog totally devoted to her family. She is looking for the same devotion to her from her family or person.

If you love big dogs and are looking for a friendly, cuddly, love bug of a dog then Sheba may be the dog for you. She is a quiet dog and well suited to many home environments as long as her exercise needs are met. She enjoys outdoor time and would love a fenced yard to enjoy but it’s not a necessity. Sheba’s top requirement is a family or person who will commit to her and give her a forever home. She has been abandoned once already and for such a loyal and devoted dog this is devastating. She needs to belong to a family where she is a valued family member and will never be abandoned again. Sheba will provide her new family a lot of love and companionship. You will just need to ensure that your legs can take the full body dog lean!!
