My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What is your name? Bear

How old are you? I’m approximately 3 years old

How much do you weigh? A slim 60-ish lbs

What do you look like? I am tall, dark and VERY handsome!! I also have a long black coat, I'm a retriever mix

What do you like to eat? I’m a “Taste of the Wild, Salmon” junkie!

What kind of personality do you have? I am EXTREMELY SILLY! I enjoy talking…well, you may call it barking but I do it out of joy! I’m a very playful boy that loves to run and play with my friends. I am a little unsure of some people I meet but I trust quickly! Once you’ve given me a few minutes to meet you then I’m your best friend! I prefer to be a ‘stay at home- dog’ and I have a very good explanation for that!

Describe your perfect day: I get up and go potty then eat my breakfast! I rest then its playtime with the girls…oh, I have lots of girlfriends! One is an Norcal Bully Breed Rescue foster, Zoey and my other girlfriend is resident dog, Bailey. I love the ladies….oh, yeah…my perfect day….then I take a nap, might do some training or play fetch then by that time its dinner then I get ready for bed!

What is your favorite toy? A big ‘ol tug rope to play with my doggy friends! I am a softy, I let the girls win but it gets me points with them so it pays off for me!

Do you know any tricks? I can talk…I can also shake with my paw!

What scares you? Mean people and weird noises outside!

Have you been around children? Do you like them? I have been around children I didn’t care but because I’ve never really been around them a lot I think I should have a home without little ones.

Do you like cats? Oh boy, do I….I will drool and get this really goofy crazy face when I see them! I have a feeling you meant do I get along with them and that’s a big NO!

How do you feel about other dogs? I LOVE the ladies! I’ve been with boy dogs and have this thing where I flex my muscles around them. I’m not serious, I just want to see them get scared and I’ve been told that one day I’ll do that to wrong boy dog one day and get a black eye. I just better stick to just the ladies! I LOVE TO PLAY!

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be? In my forever home, lying next to my humans feet while they’re relaxing and watching TV

How is your health? I’m a healthy boy!

Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion? I live with my trainer and her husband and I’d have to say my favorite person is my trainer, I love the husband too but my trainer just gets me :)

Where do you hang out when you are home alone? I have my own room!! I’m not destructive at all but when another dog comes to stay that is very very scared then I share my room and go in a crate. I don’t mind being my crate either.

Where do you sleep? In my room or crate

Do you like walking on a leash? I do! But prefer to stick near my house and not in crowded public places.

Do you have any "not-so-great" habits that we should know about? For instance, do you bark or dig in the yard? Yes, I bark. That means you will know if someone weird is outside of the house!

Are you house trained? (Meaning do you go potty outside) Yep!

Do you like water? Yep, I love to drink it!

What do you love about your foster family? They've helped me feel what its like to trust humans again. If I had ended up in a shelter then I would’ve been euthanized, that’s how bad I was but I’m so glad I’m mostly normal again!

What was your life like before being brought into NorCal Bully Breed Rescue? You see, I was left tethered to a pole in the foothills and it was SCARY! Deer, dogs, people would mess with me and I couldn’t run away! That lead to my reacting to everything to scare them away. I was found by this nice lady who took me directly to Tug Dogs for training…at the time I wanted to attack everything that moved, even leaves! I had PTSD- like behavior! Pam Payen with Finding Freddie is my Angel, she got me out of a bad situation and paid for all my training….she didn’t even know me! After my training I continued to stay with my trainer until I found my forever home. My Angel, Pam Payen isn’t part of rescue so NBBR is helping us for my home! I am very thankful to everyone who has helped me through everything and showing me how to be a happy and thriving dog!

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue is a foster based rescue with foster homes spread all throughout the Sacramento area. We usually require our adopters to be within a 50 to 100 mile radius of us, depending on the dog, and depending on the home. This is because we need to do a yard check to guarantee that the potential adopter's yard is secure, and also have them be close enough should any behavioral issues arise, and the assistance of our trainer is needed. We are, however, willing to adopt out of our area, including the Bay Area, Tahoe, and even further. We've even adopted out of state on very special occasions. We try our best to match our dogs to the perfect homes, and match them based on their personalities, not their looks. Adoptions are not done on a first come, first serve basis, rather in the order of what homes are the right match for that particular dog. Our adoption fees are based on the dog and range from $200-$350. In the case of senior dogs (6+ years), fees will be waived to the right home. This includes spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and deworming (if necessary).

Bear's adoption donation is $200.
