My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ADOPTION PENDING ---- Biscuit - Lab mix best guess - young (8-11 months) female/spayed - 40 pounds - golden brown short coat with white markings

Biscuit’s breed may be an enigma to us - but everything else about her is crystal clear. She is an exceptional dog whose time in foster care has only given us more to love and admire about her.

Biscuit has been guessed variously as a lab mix, a black-mouth mountain cur, and our own belief - that she is a true Heinz 57. At 40 pounds she is on the small side of medium, and every ounce of her is filled with affection and love.

We have no history on Biscuit - she was brought into a rural WV Animal Control facility as a stray. Humane officers, upon meeting Biscuit, recognized immediately that she would never have run away from home - in fact, Biscuit’s first impulse upon meeting anyone - human, canine or feline - is to go TO them offering the most open and friendly of greetings.

After weeks of advertising Biscuit in hopes of reuniting her with her family, Animal Control reached out to Hedgesville Hounds, and she was brought into our rescue. We were happy to welcome her into foster care, and surprised to learn that such a young pup was heart worm positive. Fortunately, Biscuit’s prognosis was very bright - and her heart worm was treated at the earliest stage with complete success.

Biscuit has delighted us with her kind and honest demeanor, her cooperative nature, and her great adaptability. She wants to please and be of purpose, and these qualities were tested during the period after her heart worm treatment, when she was on weeks of restricted exercise. Quite remarkably, Biscuit, a young and vigorous pup, complied with all of the medical protocols which were in place - and she cooperated with sweetness and acceptance.

A big part of what made Biscuit’s acceptance possible is that for Biscuit, attention and snuggling are rewards that rival treats. She is a very tactile dog, and derives extreme contentment from physical proximity. So, while it was not unexpected that she was irresistibly drawn to occasional “break-out moments” of joyful romping with her canine foster brother, she was happily led back to her place on the couch, where she would resume watching television in exchange for petting.

Prior to her medical treatments, Biscuit was also cleared for attending a week at Peacable Paws Basic Manners Academy, where she partnered with a trainer-in-training under the guidance of Pat Miller. This week of all-positive, force-free training gave Biscuit a real boost in her understanding of verbal cues, and it served to reinforce her native belief in the goodness of people, and her expectancy of good. Biscuit is not only house trained, she is also fluent in the cues “sit”, “down”, “off”, “paw”, “come”, “crate”, and of course, her own name, which she loves to hear.

All of these skills have been supported and enhanced in her devoted foster home, where she has found love and nurture. And, while Biscuit is not remotely needy, she is what we call a “champion cuddler”, and her ideal home would be one in which she was welcome to join family members on the couch, and even on the bed.

Biscuit has been socialized with humans of all ages and sizes. She rides well in the car. She would offer wonderful companionship to another dog, and absolute faith and devotion to her adoptive humans. Since Biscuit is still a puppy, her adopters should be prepared to continue to provide her the nurturing and positive guidance that she will need to grow into adulthood. She will reward them with her whole heart, her keen intelligence, and her gentle disposition.
