Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This is one happy, funny, tail wagging, energetic, playful young dog! He loves riding in cars, playing with his gentle canine pals, running after toys. In fact he seems just like a normal average pup!
Looking at MURPHY, it's hard to imagine that this happy friendly pup was given up by his owner because he was 'aggressive'. What his owner didn't seem to realize was that the small dog was in terrible pain. He was kept in a crate in a basement except to be let outside to potty. And the owner told us he had taken him to the shelter to be put to sleep but they had refused to do so.
As soon as we picked MURPHY up from his original home, our vet technician took one look at him and rushed him to the ophthamologist at UC Davis.
Turns out that MURPHY was born with an eye condition that led to detachment of his lenses in both eyes. This caused high pressure in his eyes, leading to swelling and extreme pain. When we rescued MURPHY, he was already fully blind in the right eye. The vets at UC Davis removed the lens in his left eye to relieve the pressure and prevent blindness in that eye too. MURPHY has limited vision in his left eye, though you'd barely know it looking at him! We covered the cost of the surgery and are very grateful to the Compassionate Care Fund at UC Davis for making a grant to us to cover some of the cost to help MURPHY.
This means that MURPHY requires a special home - one where he feels safe and secure, where trust can be built with the people in the home. He must be walked on a harness and not by a collar on his neck, because any pressure exerted on his neck can impact the pressure in his eyes. He may need occasional check ups with an ophthalmologist throughout his life and most importantly, he will require eye drops for the rest of his life.
This wonderful little dog will reward you with love, affection, kisses and loyalty and will bring a smile to your face every time you think about how close he came to not being the survivor he truly is.
