My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Emily is a female adult rottie whose age is unknown. We believe that she is probably about 3 years old or so. A family found her last winter running in the desert, and brought her home. She was nothing but skin and bones back then. Emaciated to the extreme. You could easily count every vertebrae. The family that found her, didn't want her in the house because she had s couple of ticks on her, so they were keeping her outside on their patio, in a plastic airline crate with blankets on top. It was 18 degrees the night I picked her up. She didn't have an ounce of fat on her body and ended up with pneumonia. The family had taken Emily to a vet and the vet diagnosed her as a diabetic.

Emily
Gorgeous Classic Rottie – BEAUTIFUL Rottie face, sturdy build and VERY, VERY loving!!

Her special needs do NOT limit her ability to enjoy life to the FULLEST . . she is not shy or limited in any way, shape or form. She is truly one of the BEST, EASIEST and MOST LOVING fosters I have had the pleasure of caring for in my 10+ years of being involved in rescue. Again, Emily not only LOVES her people, but she loves her toys, is super-duper smart, well-behaved, trusting, adorable and even silly (she loves the semi-deflated basketball and is a HOOT to watch as she chases it around). She will melt your heart and bring you countless hours of love and laughter!!! She likes to play tug-a-war with her anyone that will engage her and once she “wins the toy”, she will trot off to hide it away in her kennel. Her favorite toys are ones that squeak or move a bit but she’s really not picky at all . . She truly LOVES all toys, she doesn’t tear up her toys or bedding, but she is really a bit of a toy hoarder so you can usually find most (if not all of her toys) tucked away in her kennel. She’s likes little rawhide chews, but she can only have certain ones because some tend to make her gag. We also ALWAYS supervise her when she eats any type of treats but especially rawhides (sadly we have heard too many stories of dogs choking to death on rawhides while unsupervised). As far as co-existing with other pets, Emily seems fine with small dogs – female or male – and she mostly ignores them, however she is extremely curious of cats (and not in a good way) so a kitty-free household, or one in which interaction with cats is completely restricted, would be best for her. Emily gets along well with large or medium sized male dogs but probably wouldn’t be happy with a dominant large female dog in the same household. Even though she is social and loves her other fur-pals, if they are playing rough I keep her separated due to her restricted vision as it’s not fair for her to get “ambushed” by the other dogs when they are engaging in ruff play behavior. However, all that being said, I think Emily would do fine as an only dog too. She does not bark much, but she will alert you if a stranger is around that she is not familiar with. I also have to say that she gets around REALLY well even with her limited vision - which leads me to believe she can at least see shadows, if not even more. She loves, loves, loves her walks and will sleep quietly at your feet while you watch TV and/or work on your PC. She is ok being left on her own as long as she has access to a doggie door. She would NEVER, EVER, EVER pottie in the house, her kennel or her sleeping area and she is extremely good at finding a way to let herself out to go pottie if needed. She is also very good about sleeping the day away if there is nothing going on or if you are away at work, running errands, etc but she’s also ready to go, at a moment’s notice, if she has the opportunity to tag along). Emily is a great passenger too – preferring to just lay quietly as you are traveling down the road. She also listens very well and has a great memory! Usually you only have to show or tell her something once and she understands, remembers and will act accordingly going forward. She really is a TOTAL dream dog and a breeze to care for, even with her diabetes!! In summary, I would have to say that Emily’s main goals in life are to love, be loved and to please her pet parents, everything else (even toys, walks and belly rubs) are secondary to those first 3 things!! Bottom line, “to know Emily is to love Emily” – there is no way around it. She is truly one of the most endearing dogs ever!!!!

Update we are in the process of switching Emily to a long lasting insulin so that she will only need one injection per day and she will be able to eat whenever she wants. This will make things much more simple.
