Polka was brought to the vet once, only to have the vet discover that her family had moved out of town and left her behind. She was adopted but then ended up back after it was discovered that she was being abused. Soon enough, she had a litter of puppies. She was put on a 30-day program that determined that she would be transferred to a kill shelter if she was not adopted within the month. Her puppies were taken from her; to have her spayed and left alone, too depressed to lift her head from the floor of her tiny cage. When her month was up and they were preparing her for transfer, we stepped into the shelter nextdoor to the vet we had just left. We only meant to look at a few dogs and leave, until we came across Polka and discovered what was to be her fate. We knew we had to get her out of there, despite our inability to permanently add a dog to our family. She immediately perked up and became the happiest, sweetest, most eager-to-please dog, patiently awaiting her forever family.
