My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Beautiful, Adoptable Abbey is the Perfect Tripawd!

Please let us introduce you to our beautiful spirited girl, Abbey. This 1-2 year old spayed female is a medium to large size (54 Lbs) Flat Coat Retriever/Aussie mix breed that will bring cheer for years to come! Found as a stray in central North Carolina, Abbey was captured and spent ten days at the local county shelter before being rescued the Farley Foundation (TFF) in August 2017.

Abbey displayed a severe limp in her right, front leg which was subsequently discovered to be caused by a shattered elbow, the result of an apparent gunshot wound that was never treated. Thin and malnourished, Abbey spent the first two weeks at TFF receiving pain management while eating and sleeping to gain the necessary weight for surgery.

Abbey is as sweet as they come and very tolerant with those who cared for her during her post-surgery recovery. Once Abbey was fitted with her Tripawd harness, life took on a whole new meaning. Nothing now prevents her from living life to the fullest; her recovery has literally progressed in leaps and bounds and she has blossomed into a stunning beautiful companion!!

Abbey enjoys car rides and has no difficulty entering and exiting a vehicle or climbing or descending stairs. Due to Abbey’s strong will and spirited personality she can be selective of other dogs and requires a dog-savvy owner/Handler. She insists on being the alpha dog and leads the pack through numerous nature trails; she has built up her endurance to walk up to 1.5 miles with a periodic rest stops. Being “on the go” is a priority for Abbey but she has a definite “off switch” once she exerts her youthful energy. She loves other dogs and prefers younger, somewhat smaller active females for play. Her two BFFs are both 1-2 year old neutral, female Pitbull Terriers. Abbey is starting to discover the wonderful qualities of our frisky felines. She has just recently befriended a kitten and appears to shelter and protect it. Slow introductions are required.

Abbey loves everyone she meets and displays a particular fondness for little girls (ages 7 and older). She is very eager to please and will gladly roll over for a belly rub! Above all else, Abbey adores her humans and would be an excellent companion for active retirees, a stay home parent or a fabulous door greeter for a local business. Abbey often visits our local Memory Care facility and delights in greeting every resident. Abbey and her beautiful plume of a tail can maneuver around wheelchairs, walkers and cane devices with ease. With the right owner and structure, Abbey-Gal could easily be a wonderful Therapy or Emotional Support Dog. She is extremely mindful of verbal commands and knows SIT & WAIT. Abbey is treat motivated and will happily oblige to any request. Abbey needs to know she has earned her owner's love, devotion and above all else, their respect.

Abbey will definitely be an easy companion if the home has a fenced yard and a deck for sunbathing. Abbey is most active when temperatures are between 40-60 degrees or colder; she LOVES snow and doing “zoomies” for hours on end! Abbey is housebroken and will bark and proceed to the door when she needs to be let out. Abbey is crate trained and more often than not, her foster parents will find her resting inside “her den” with her favorite toy. Abbey loves squeaky toys, playing chase and tug-of-war with her BFFs, going for car rides and being your faithful companion.

Abbey is also a physical beauty in her own right. Her coat is full and extremely soft to the touch and accented with fluffs of white on her hind quarters. Abbey is completely vetted, UTD on vaccines & monthly preventives and heartworm negative.

Abbey is a rare find and will undoubtedly bring considerable joy to one lucky family.
