My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gulliver - young (2 years of age) - Labrador Retriever/hound best guess - large (70 pounds) - white plush coat with black spots

This lovable fellow has stolen everyone’s hearts with his kind, gentle and friendly nature. Large though he is, Gulliver inspires a sense of protective love in his foster parents, because he is so inordinately grateful and innocent.

Long-bodied and sturdy, Gulliver’s appearance is unique - and slightly comical - because of the two black spots over his eyes. His eye contact is soft, direct and curious, and he often seems to be puzzling over what he can do to be of purpose. Gulliver has an exceptionally affectionate nature, and he revels in attention. Extremely tactile, he loves to be stroked and petted.

Gulliver’s friendly and outgoing nature also extends to other dogs. He is comfortable around cats as well.

Gulliver was brought into a rural Animal Control after having been reported as a stray. At large for several days, Gulliver was covered in ticks when he was brought into safe keeping. Although his original family was eventually located, they declined to take him back, and Animal Control learned that in his former life he had been kept tied up outdoors, and repeatedly had broken loose.

This may explain why Gulliver is so profoundly grateful to be in a foster home in which he is always welcome to come in the door from his fenced back yard, and to join the family unit. He sits as close as he can on the ground next to his foster mom, occasionally ducking his big head under her hand for a reassuring pat. While not a needy nor a nervous guy, Gulliver does not take anything for granted, and he seems filled with happiness each day that he has people upon whom he can rely for a hug and a snuggle, foster dog friends with whom he can play, and regular meals morning and evening.

Outdoors, Gulliver romps and plays with gusto - his energy level is high and appropriate for such a young dog. Indoors, Gulliver is completely house trained, and is what his foster mom calls a “wiggle butt” - his happiness truly is expressed throughout his entire body, from his shining brown eyes to the tip of his joyfully wagging tail. At play, Gulliver wiggles, wags and gambols through the yard in a loose and bouncing style of motion.

Gulliver participated in a one week basic manners Academy at renowned positive trainer Pat Miller’s facility Peacable Paws. During that week, Gulliver partnered with a trainer-in-training and learned a reliable sit, down, come and stay. Gulliver is eager to please and he responded with trust and faith throughout the entire week to the positive reward-based and force-free learning program. Gulliver’s adopter(s) are now eligible for 7 weeks of free basic manners classes at Peacable Paws, a generous offer that Ms. Miller has made as a thank you for our loan to her of Gulliver, and an invaluable opportunity for his adopters to continue Gulliver’s training, and to establish a bond with him.

Gulliver rides well in a car. He especially cherishes his little stash of squeaky toys. He also walks well on lead.

Gulliver is an honest and kind dog who wears his great heart on his sleeve. He will reward the commitment and love of his adopter(s) with absolute faith and endearing goodness.

We would prefer a securely fenced yard for Gulliver.
