My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Davie is a 18 month-old neutered male black lab. Davie weighs 55 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.

Adopters must meet these requirements:
Setting: Rural
Dwelling: Single Family Home
Fencing: Physical Fence Required
Dog: Must go to a home with another dog.

Davie is from a rural area and has not been exposed to traffic, noise, or groups of people. If dogs are overwhelmed by their environment, they can exhibit behaviors like excessive barking. For now, to avoid this we are limiting placement to stand alone single family homes in a suburban neighborhood or rural area. After Davie has been in a foster home for at least a week or two, we will evaluate if placement can be expanded to include a more urban environment and send out an update.

Sept 5, 2017: His personality is definitely coming out a bit more a few days into foster. Davie continues to be a cuddle bug. He does great with two resident dogs. His energy level is moderate. He's learning to walk on a leash, and has a lot of potential there, but honestly could be a content couch potato as long as he has snuggles! He is treat driven, and is really good with "sit" for treats, he easily shares with the other dogs. btw, he eats his whole meal, but does so at a good pace. He sniffs and trots along the yard, but largely prefers inside. He needs some encouragement to go to the bathroom, but once he does, he is happy as a clam! Davie doesn't react as skittish around noises like fire trucks, lawn mowers or kids, so he's adapting to suburban life just fine. I don't think we have actually heard him bark, even when the resident dogs do over excitement for someone at the door. He does need to be tethered or crated in the car, he likes to think he is the driver.

Sept 2, 2017: We picked him up yesterday and have practically been snuggling ever since! Once he warms up, Davie can't get enough human attention. He's about 18 months, 50 pounds, house trained, and good with other dogs. He has a healthy appetite and takes treats very gently. How can you not love this little guy???

Aug 25, 2017: Davie was rescued from a hoarding situation. The man had 27 dogs and agreed to relinquish 20 of them to rescue. Davie was very scared for the first couple days but now all he wants is loving and a soft bed. Davie absolutely LOVES being with people, bonds quickly, and listens very well. Davie is house trained and doesn’t need a crate. He knows how to use a doggie door, shares treats and chew toys with other dogs, and is quite playful. Davie is good with cats and all dogs including small dogs. Davie MUST GO TO A HOME WITH ANOTHER DOG to help build his confidence.

Davie has come a long way in his temporary foster home with the local SWVA foster and their dogs. But, Davie is still shy/timid with new people and situations. He will need a patient family that will give him time, guidance, and gentle encouragement. Davie requires a fenced yard (physical fence) because he hesitates to potty on a leash. When outside the fence/home, Davie MUST BE leashed as he tends to shy away from introductions to new people. Just timid, never reactive. However, as evident by his time with the local foster, Davie will come around quickly. Once he knows you, he will be your shadow and cuddle with you on the bed or couch. He absolutely LOVES other dogs and MUST GO TO A HOME WITH ANOTHER DOG. Davie is completely trustworthy free roam in the house. There is no history of Davie living with children so he is approved for 10 years and up.

From the transporter: Davie is a very timid guy. Super sweet but just shy about meeting new people and situations. Once Davie settled in my car, he relaxed and went to sleep. I had to pick him up to put him in my car and get him out. He considered doing both by himself, but just didn't quite have the confidence. Davie has not had much leash training but was picking up on it pretty quickly. Davie is incredibly sweet and I hated leaving him. He was a little hesitant to enter the building but, once inside, he did good.

Davie is a 1 1/2 year old black neutered male. He is current on his vaccines and weighs 55 pounds.
