This is a story of caring, love and the indomitable spirit of a dog named Daisy.
Daisy was one of many dogs that are born in Northern Ontario and left to fend for themselves. They run in packs looking for food where they can find it, doing their best to survive. Every year there is generally a cull by the government which ends with many dogs being caught and destroyed. This year however the cull didn’t happen, and a little dog named Daisy didn’t lose her life, but she had a hard road ahead of her nonetheless, just trying to survive.
Daisy was not a very big dog and was beat out by the larger dogs, often going without enough to eat. Left on her own, she would never have survived. Luckily a young couple who was working in the town took notice of the little dog and their hearts went out to her. They couldn’t take her in but they also couldn’t bear to watch her struggle and her possible death. So, they did the best they could and built her a shelter where they lived and began to feed her. They named her “Daisy”. Although Daisy would come and go throughout the day, she now had a safe place to lay her head each night and enough food to survive.
When the couple had to leave town they knew that Daisy wouldn’t survive without their help so they decided to bring her with them and reach out for help in the community. Unfortunately, just before she was to make her way to safety, Daisy came into heat and was caught by one of the local dogs, people called “harness dog”. This dog always wore a harness but no one knew if he was someone’s pet or had just been abandoned wearing the harness. The hope of finding someone to take Daisy seemed a more difficult task now that she was pregnant and the couple were unsure of what to do.
We are so very thankful that the couple brought Daisy with them and turned to their family for help. In doing so, the family reached out to Ugly Mutts Dog Rescue and their story touched our hearts. Needless to say, Daisy is now in our care and her and her little family are doing great! There was a bit of a surprise however, when what was originally thought to be three puppies by the vet, turned out to be nine! We would like to say “thank you” to the couple who saved this sweet dog and to the family who worked with Sara, Ugly Mutts Intake Coordinator to ensure a successful birth for all the pups and a healthy mom throughout. Daisy looks amazing and it is obvious that she feels loved by all.
Daisy is a most gentle soul. She is just a lovely dog who is friendly to everyone including children, and strangers and just seems to take everything in her stride. The look in her eyes will melt your heart and the trust she so easily gives to people is amazing, considering the situation she came from. She is going to make an amazing, wonderful companion for whoever is lucky enough to adopt her when the time comes. For now, she has nine babies to care for and what a wonderful mother she is! Once the babies are old enough and find their own homes, this adorable girl will get her chance to be adopted. That day is not far off, and we can’t wait for Daisy to finally be part of a loving family and finally find her “forever home”.
Caring for this little family is a pleasure but of course a large expense for the rescue. We are so incredibly grateful and want to send a big “thank you” to Kate, of Pet Valu – 920 Upper Wentworth St, Hamilton for donating all the food for Daisy and when the time comes, for all the pups. I have also been told that Kate is donating a large dog bed which will fit the whole little family!!

Adoption Information: If you are interested in adding a puppy to your family, please note that these pups were born on August 12th and will not be available for adoption until/after October 7th, 2017. Individual bios on each of the pups will be posted when they are ready to find their forever homes. Daisy will also be available for adoption once the pups have been weaned and she has had all her vetting completed.
