My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Carmelita was surrendered to an Abq shelter because her human could no longer afford her. She was with him since birth and arrived in decent physical condition, but with no experience of friendship with humans. She was so terrified she didn't move for two days and the shelter staff thought euthanasia might be the kindest thing they could do for her. BUT, perhaps Carmelita can read, because as soon as the big E appeared on her kennel door, she lifted her head and crept toward the trainer's outstretched hands. She seemed to say, "I have decided I would like to try that new life I heard you talk about for me."

It was another one of those last-second reprieves and we are thrilled to have Carmelita with us, running, smiling, turning inside-out for rubs. She is of course devoted to her caretaker, and understandably still shy of strangers. She opens her heart and offers trust a little more each day. She is gentle and kind, and absolutely loves other dogs.

We won't take Carmelita to adoption events for awhile, but she is completely ready to bond with her own true family. All she needs is patient understanding that this is all so very new for her and she needs to move within her own comfort level. If you think you might be that family, we will gladly bring her to your house to spend time together, see how it feels to share your space with her.

Spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, house trained. She arrived walking on a leash with the trainer who saved her life, but we haven't practiced since then.

Carmelita is 8 months old (as of Dec. 08)
Adoption Fee: $150
