Bauer was surrendered by his owners for euthanasia when they ran out of patience with his "bad attitude" after biting the male in the family. As the story unravelled, it turns out that the man was the one who would "discipline" Bauer. Dogs cannot speak and tell us their story, but their behavior speaks volumes, and Bauer has a deeply ingrained fear and distrust of men. What is significant is that he was a perfect gentleman while being groomed, despite heavy matting and the fact that many parts would have been painful to him. This tells us that he's not just a snotty dog by nature, but this fear of men is a learned behavior based on past experiences. He did not try to bite the groomer or even lift a lip at her. He's very friendly and comfortable with women. Bauer is a Lhasa Apso cross and about 25 lbs, and about 4 years old. He is good with his foster catbrother but does chase him for sport and doesn't get why the cat isn't interested in playing - he is immediately responsive to a verbal call-off by his foster mom. He's been fine but somewhat aloof with his foster dogbrother, until after his groom, when he actually full out played with him - his long matted coat likely was making play something too uncomfortable and painful. He's a nice little dog who once adopted, we'll happily coach his family on doing a desensitization and counterconditioning program to fix his distrust of men. We'd like to assess him a bit more to gauge his suitability to a home with kids, and of what sizes/ages. He has an underbite and a rye mouth which give him a very silly expression, and he looks surprisingly similar to Darwin now all trimmed and pretty!
