RALPHIE
Portland, Maine
Meet Ralphie - a big, goofy, sweet boy who was rescued from a local Maine shelter. Poor Ralphie has been in the Maine shelter system since he was a young boy. He lived in one home from puppiehood to teenager and was turned over to a shelter in upstate Maine when his original owner ran into difficult financial times.
After months of sitting and waiting for his forever home - Ralphie was then transfered to the Westbrook Animal Refugue League - where again nobody showed interest in taking him home. We do not know why Ralphie was not adopted - he is a fabulous dog! He may not be small, cute and fluffy - but we think he is gorgeous inside and out. We are thrilled to have him in our rescue.
Ralphie is now living in a foster home in Portland with three other dogs, multiple cats, a parrot and a turtle! We estimate him to be approximately two years old. He gets along well with all.
He is a big boy - weighing in at approximately 80 lbs.
Ralphie enjoys morning and evening hikes with his foster mom and canine buddies. He also is a big fan of the local dog park.
His foster home has a fenced in yard with a doggie door. When at home you can find Ralphie lying on a dog bed, chewing on a bone, or hanging out in the yard taking a nap either on or under the picnic table. He also enjoys swimming!
Ralphie is house trained and well behaved in the home when left alone. He does not need to be crated.
Ralpie had some insecurities when he came into foster care, as he had essentially grown up in the shelter environment with little training and socialization. He was fearful of strangers and protective of his food.
However, after being in a consistent environment and receiving positive guidance, socialization and training from his foster mom - Ralphie appears to have overcome these challenges. He is a good listener and eager to please. He will need the same consistency from his new guardian to ensure the he remains a confident, secure pup.
Ralphie is an excellent "pack" dog. We feel that he would be happiest in a home where there is at least one other dog in residence.
This is an awfully nice dog - who will thrive in a home with a confident caretaker who knows how to set and maintain boundaries, and believe in positive reinforcement training.
An ideal home for Ralphie would be:
-- One where he receives daily exercise
-- One where there is at least one other dog to play with
-- One with a fenced in yard and room to run
