My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Heidi is a 7 year old very affectionate female Dane who loves long walks, car rides and lots of love. She’ll eat her raw hide bones and will occasionally play catch with her football toy, otherwise she’s not into the other “younger” dog play things but she is a very young seven.

She has absolutely no food issues; you can put your hand right in her dish, pull away her food, and even take food out of her mouth. She is not a “counter surfer”. She won’t try for wrapped food and knows that open food is not hers with a simple “No, not yours” explanation. So far we’ve found that Heidi knows the basic commands of “sit, paw, high five, stay, down, no”. Commands might take one or two times to reinforce, but she will listen with focused attention.

Heidi has a lipoma (fatty, non-benign tumor) on her front leg; it’s not giving her any pain or difficulties. She also has a couple of old age lumps and bumps but has a beautiful, smoky-blue color, shiny coat and otherwise looks very strong and healthy. Heidi does not like thunder storms, cowers away and needs reassurance that everything will be OK. But otherwise she is being exposed to lots of new things and within a very short period of time has taken to all of them incredibly well. On day two at our home we were able to bathe her without issues. She is house broken and will walk to the door repeatedly to let you know when it’s time….

Heidi gets along wonderfully with the neighborhood dogs (small, medium, and large). She did live with 3 Yorkies and a male dane in her old home but has no cat experience. She gets along great with all of us two legged dogs (also known as humans). She also lived with 4 kids (5, 4, and 2yr old twins) in her last home but feel that she would be happier with older kids that will allow her to just hang around the house. She’s inquisitive, loves to smell everything, but she is not a licker. In the 2 weeks we’ve cared for her we realize she thrives on affection. Each day brings more happiness to us and to Heidi.

Update 10/10/09 - Heidi enjoys going for long walks, going to the dog park and attending doggy
day camp where she loves to make friends. She really prefers the company of her foster parents then being alone so they are working on her slight separation anxiety by leaving her for short periods of time! Heidi would make the perfect addition to a family!

Update 1/10/10 - Heidi has received a clean bill of health on her leg. She has no more limping and the bruising from the cast is almost gone. She is ready and waiting for her forever home!
