Fred's Story...
Notes: Male, 9 months old Basenji mix Fred's Foster Parents Write: History: Fred was a stray scheduled to be killed by Animal Control in Artesia, NM. He lost the use of his left eye, apparently due to an injury, sometime in the past. Nothing more is known of his history. Vet says there is a globe in the injured eye, but it could never provide vision. To close the eye would require removal of the globe, tear glands, etc. and would be a complex, difficult, painful, and expensive surgery. Traits: Very intelligent, lovable, friendly. Socialized toward people, but still a bit shy. Gets along well with other dogs. Loves to be petted and given affection and to lounge on furniture. House trained in 4 days and knows how to use a doggie door. Weight: 32 lbs. Color: Brown/white markings. Neutered, vaccinated, Heartworm negative.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Fred, a Santa Fe Basenji dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Basenji for sale in Santa Fe, or seeking a Basenji dog from a breeder in Santa Fe.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Santa Fe already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Santa Fe breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Basenji breeders who help with Basenji rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Santa Fe paves the way for another one to be saved.
