My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! Im Binky! I'm so glad my foster mommy is finally letting me have a chance to say hello and try to locate my forever family! I feel like I've been healthy and energetic ever since AZBHR took me in, but I know this wasn't always the case so I had to wait...

You see, when I wandered into the yard of the people who seemed like they would care for me and help me find you all, I had what is called Demodex Mange all over my body. These mites are pretty normal to find on healthy dogs I'm told but in my case I was pretty under weight and I can't really remember what I was eating or how often so I wasn't in very good health to fight them off. I was..............well..........bald.

I smelled very very bad too due to the infection in my skin from this.

Now I have special oatmeal shampoo from my doctor and I get to have baths and rubbings and brushings and I eat really good food here and as much as I want so I have gone from 36 lbs to 41.50 in just the time I've been with my foster family. My doctor had said I may never re-grow fur in some parts of my body but I'm seeming to, and even the thick parts of my skin that were in the worst shape are softening and mom says I look like a baby duck. What's a duck?

June 22nd Update:
Binky currently is looking worlds better. This morning was his last day of antibiotic and all the pink is gone from his skin and he looks healthy.. putting on wt finally also and not skin and bones. His fur is coming back in and longer in some areas than others -the areas on his hips are still bald (he kind of resembles a lawn that had grown some baby grass but it didn't get watered and he heat fried it in it's tracks) the parts that were bald are now soft and he doesn't smell at all anymore.

I never rush the door when it opens and I'm very good on a leash and in the car. What I like most is to be part of the pack at my house. Whenever cuddles and hugs are going on I climb right in and make sure I get a lot of these. I like kids but not quite as much as I like to wrestle with my foster brother, who is teaching me what appropriate levels of play biting are. I like to sit on my bottom and have my family hold my front paws and tell me stories of how very loved I am and how my family is looking for me this very minute and missing and needing me in their lives just as much as I'm needing them. I will listen for a few minutes then put my arms around their shoulders while they kiss my ears and hold me tight.

I don't know if you are the family looking for me and I understand if you're not, after all I have a lot of friends who are also looking for homes so we need to make sure for all of us that we find who we belong to, but if you ARE my special, loving family please come get me. I wanna go to the park -SHOTGUN! and hey can we swing by Doggyland on the way? I LOVE it there! Will I have a brother to romp with? Will you boost me on your shoulders at parades? Can I eat ice cream off your spoon? And the couch is by a window right?

Well, we can work on that when I get there just make sure you have cheese and also.....pizza, you eat pizza right?
Love Binky
July 27 Update: Binky underwent sedation for x rays today. Dr Mackenzie explained to me that regarding his knees, the tendon behind the kneecap that holds it in place is a bit prolapsed in both knees however the left is markedly worse than the right. This explains why Binky will lunge while walking from time to time and after he stands up will make a lunge type of stretch -he's learned that if he does this it helps his knees go back where they belong. Surgery to correct is not something he'd advise at this stage based on the combination of the hip implications he's also showing and the fact that currently he seems quite mobile despite all this. Regarding the hips, the right is worse than the left, but both show damage caused by nothing more than just being lucky enough to be born a Basset. Surgery is a consideration, however not one this vet would consider in Binky's best interest after having the x rays done. His suggestions are long term Glucosamine, and periodic anti-inflammatory medications. The Glucosamine will have no negative reaction used over his lifetime and will not cure the damage or restore him, however will help him maintain the level of function he now has. As Binky ages, and arthritis plays it's role, surgery may be more warranted. Spine is in very good shape, Binky is fully developed as the growth plates in all bones have fused so he's sticking with no more than 2 years old.
