My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I'm told that Toto in Taiwanese means "big eyes" - and this one to one and a half year old little boy has the biggest, way out there eyes I've ever seen! But those eyes are small compared to the size of his heart! This is one very loving Peke! On his first night here, he jumped up on the bed, found room on the pillow, and layed his head on my neck - and he has slept that way ever since. Toto would be a perfect companion for anyone - he likes all people, dogs, and cats. But, those big eyes of his don't come without problems. He's currently being treated for an infected scratch on his cornea. And, because his eyes are so prominent, they will need to be protected to prevent anything from happening to them. So, we're afraid we can't adopt him to a home with children younger than teens, dogs that like to roughhouse, or cats with claws. Also, because of the size of his eyes, his eyelids never seem to close all the way or even blink all the way - so, per the vet's suggestion, we're putting artificial tears in a couple of times a day just to keep them moist. But Toto does produce his own tears, so at this time he doesn't have "dry eye" - however, it's possible he may in the future. Toto is being fostered in south Jersey and his asking adoption donation is $300. E-MAIL INQUIRIES ARE ANSWERED FASTER THAN PHONE CALLS.

UPDATE: Toto's eye infection wasn't clearing after two weeks of antibiotics, so we scheduled with the eye vet. Two days before the appointment his eye ruptured and we ended up in the emergency room. They made the decision to sew the eyelids together and let the veterinary opthamologist decide what to do when we kept our appointment. The first question that came to mind was why did it rupture? We now think he may have been hit by a car while he was on the streets and that pressure was building inside the eye, which the regular vets that had seen him in and out of the shelter would not have known without special equipment. But, Toto's prognosis is good - after taking out a couple of the stitches, the eye doc doesn't think the eye will need to be removed and that vision is even possible if the optic nerve wasn't stretched. We'll know more when he goes back next week and gets the rest of the stitches removed. But all this care isn't free. Toto's expenses are already over $550 between the emergency room, opthamologist, and medications. Any donations to the Toto Fund would be very appreciated - and all donators will get a card from Toto personally!
