My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hazel is being treated for heartworm.

Hazel is sweet and petite. She’s a beautiful lemon and white. She has pretty golden eyes and baggy wrinkly short legs. She’s approximately 9 years old, but nobody knows for sure as she came in from Maricopa County Animal Control. She is underweight at 39 lbs, but will never be a large dog. From the looks of her, she has been a mother before and is apparently from good breeding stock.
When Hazel came to us, our vet found an ear infection, a yeast infection, negative tick fever (which was a miracle as she was covered with more than 200 ticks – which kept coming after a dip AND a spray treatment). But, most importantly, during her general exam, she detected a moderate heart murmur. Thanks to Dr. Ferguson at Four Legged Friends Animal Hospital for catching this immediately and alerting us of her life-threatening condition. We followed shortly thereafter with a series of tests that showed us that she’s heartworm positive and that her liver and kidney functions are normal and healthy.

Following an ultrasound with Dr. Greene to tell us the nature of her murmur, we proceeded with immiticide heartworm treatment with several days of strict rest at Alma School Animal Hospital. Dr. Junger and her team of skilled and compassionate workers certainly saved this girl’s life!
Hazel has been gradually recovering from her treatment. Every day she shows us that she is feeling better. She’s gone from just laying there feeling gross to jumping up on the couch/in her chair, barking at us when we come home and running down the hall to get her dinner. She now feels well enough to use the doggie door to come in AND to go out on her own.

All along, Hazey has LOVED to have her belly rubbed. She has wagged the end of her long waggily rat tail everytime you say her name or even look at her. She’s enjoyed playing with toys (but only squeaky ones and the ones anybody else is playing with at the time). And, licking peanut butter out of a Kong can keep her busy when she’s not supposed to be doing something else.
Hazel will go in for a follow up heartworm test. She originally tested positive for adult worms and larvae (eggs). She held up TREMENDOUSLY through her first treatment, so if she requires another to rid herself of these pesky worms, that’s our plan for treatment. Hazel is quite a trooper!
She is not spayed and cannot be until these worms are completely gone. She is in need of another foster home that has foster parents who understand her and can treat her with hopeful compassion while she’s in recovery. She enjoys the company of other dogs, but needs to be in a foster home with quieter, older companions who won’t get her too excited. She’s not dangerous around cats, but will chase if they run. She literally spends hours watching her foster guinea pig and gerbils.
She’s good with strangers and likes kids, but needs to be in a fairly quiet home because of her heartworm. Anytime she gets excited, it aggravates her coughing. This is not productive for her healing
