My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sasha is a sweet, energetic two year old female Dane. Her adopters fell on hard times and she was returned to the rescue. She is housebroken, will sit, stop, and shake, but needs a bit of work heeling. My son’s friend brought his one-year-old 12-lb. beagle over and they have been having a ball romping. Right now they both are laying down within 8 inches of each other. Sasha seemed to try to be gentle with the small dog.

Sasha loves to play rough, however. She is a normal two-year-old Dane in that respect. Having said that, she has been gentle around my 80-year-old mother. She seems to know rough play with her would not be good.

Sasha makes a huge mess when she drinks water because she puts her whole face in the bowl and has to come up for air, drooling everywhere. I’ve never seen anything like it. She is a counter surfer and will steal anything. Today she was the benefactor of an entire half of a blueberry coffeecake left on the island. People were nearby, but had no clue what she was up to as she was able to clean the pie plate without moving it off the island!

Sasha is very sweet, wants to be with us constantly, has been friendly to males and females aged 21-80, loves to lean, sit in your lap, etc. I suspect she will be good with children, but would hesitate to put her in a family with toddlers as she could knock them over.

Sasha is the first dog I’ve ever had that volunteered to get a shower! This morning she walked right into the shower without being coaxed. After we got our showers, while I was getting dressed, she went back into the shower! I guess she liked it. She has let me wipe her feet, clean her ears, and let my son brush her.

Sasha knows commands and will listen, but does need to know you expect her to follow rules. She is relatively large and we’d suggest she only be adopted to a home that has had experience with large, young dogs. She will be required to have obedience training as a condition of her adoption.

We have fallen in love with Sasha. She seems to be very trusting of us and is very happy to see us return. She is awesome.

Update 7/3/10 - Sasha continues to do well. She is as loving and affectionate as any dog can be. She is as energetic and playful as any 2-year-old Dane I’ve ever had. Sasha really enjoys playing with a Rhodesian Ridgeback, they are both young and strong and love to play rough.

We have introduced Sasha to Abby. Karen and Remy brought her over three or four times now. The girls do play together, sit next to one another and eagerly await treats, drink out of water bowls in the same raised feeding tray, lay next to one another on the floor, etc. They also will occasionally growl at one another, but they are no different than any other dogs I’ve brought together in a similar setting. I think Sasha brings out some of the puppy in Abby and Abby occasionally tries to encourage Sasha to grow up!

Our kind neighbor allowed us to try to introduce Sasha to his two cats. The cats are old and have been around dogs so were not at all impressed with Sasha and just sat on the porch stoop and looked at her. Sasha slowly walked to within about four feet of them and turned and walked away.

We took Sasha to a family gathering and she was exposed to children ages 2-13 and was great around them. She was very careful and gentle around the 2-year-old. She also respected an elderly dog that didn’t want to play and was grumpy. It seems that although Sasha’s propensity is toward being rambunctious, she does have a sense about when to behave in a calm and orderly fashion.

Lastly, Sasha indeed has the Dane trait of believing couches, laps, and beds were made for her. She doesn’t generally take to them unless there is a human around, but she’s all for joining her humans on any given piece of furniture.
