My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Luna is a 11 month old (DOB 9/4/09) black female with natural ears. She came to us from a good Samaritan who picked up her and her brother from a breeder who no longer wanted them and thought them not suitable for breeding. Luna came to us with one of the worst case of cherry eyes we have ever seen. She was virtually blind and her brother served as her eyes. Her role was to protect him as he was very skittish and shy. Both Luna and her brother were very skinny. When separated from her brother, she went to her current foster home where their older Dane who took over the role of guidance. He was firm, yet gentle. Since coming to her foster home she has been spayed and had her cherry eye surgery and is a delight. Luna was afraid of everything at first and was very verbal with her reactions appearing that she was aggressive and mean. This behavior was completely fear driven and in the last 2 months she has settled in and become a typical playful 11 month old Dane pup. She is still a little more leery of men and keeps her distance. If ignored, she will quickly come to you. She does not have the same reaction to women or children. Luna lives with an older Dane and 3 cats (all of which are over the age of 18). For the most part she ignores them, unless they run and then she will chase them. She does not hurt them, but thinks they are playing. This is the same behavior the older Dane has toward them and he grew up with them. She is fine with children, though because she has not lived with children she will not be placed with children under the age of 8. When Luna came to us she lacked any kind of manners. She would jump on furniture, get on the counters, take clothing and shoes and many times destroy them. She has now learned what is her toy and what is not. She no longer jumps on the furniture, unless invited and does not bother clothing and shoes, as long as there are plenty of toys for her. She is now crate trained and goes in with just the offering of a treat. She still gets very excited when greeting us after we have been out and tends to jump; however, this behavior has diminished tremendously. Luna is completely house trained and is learning how to let us know when she needs to go out. At this time, we just make sure we let her out as often as possible. Luna has mastered the leash and is a pleasure to walk. She sometimes walks so close to you that it is hard to walk. She knows several commands; leave it, come, back up, off and wait; now that she is done with her surgeries we are working on sit, down, stay. Even off the leash, she will not leave and will come immediately upon being called. She is a very smart little girl and learns quickly. She does like to be around people or other animals all the time and is much happier with that environment. Luna currently lives in a home where people and other pets are home most of the time. She did go to stay with temporary foster while her current foster vacationed, and she did great being left during the day while her vacation Mom worked. However we did learn that she really needs to have another large dog around as she is very shy without another dog to look to. She is still very much a pup and now that she feels better her true personality is showing itself. She loves to run, throw her toys around and be in the middle of everything going on in the house. I believe with a little more time and confidence now that she can see, she will be a great addition to any family. We will continue to work with her on obedience and given her current progress she will have mastered all her commands very quickly.
