My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We have a male Three- Toed Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis) for adoption in the York, PA, area. He's healthy and active. He'll need an indoor enclosure for this winter, but in the summer he would love a backyard pen that is screened in completely to keep out rats and raccoons, with lots of room for exploring and digging and soaking in a water pan or shallow pond designed just for box turtles. If he's adopted to southern MD or further south, he could hibernate outside next winter.
E-mail matts_adoptions@hotmail.com if you'd like a picture of an example of a temporary enclosure that would be OK for this winter. If he lives indoors, permanently, he'd need at least 8 square feet of space, such as a modified "tortoise table". Males may harrass other males and lone females, so it's probably best if he's the only turtle in the enclosure, or he'd need a very large enclosure with lots of hide spots if he's kept with other turtles.

This boy is an adult, about 5" long, which means he may be 10-30 years old, but with another 20-40 years ahead of him. He's eating the diet recommended here:

There is a $25 adoption fee.

The book Box Turtles by Tess Cook is the best on box turtle husbandry, and is available in many pet stores and libraries.

To request an application and a picture of a simple temporary indoor enclosure, if needed, e-mail matts_adoptions@hotmail.com - make sure to indicate your CITY and STATE. NO SHIPPING - Pick Up Only from York, PA, or Baltimore, MD.

We cannot place Three-Toed Box Turtles in GA, TN, or NY. Residents of NJ require a permit for turtles, but it's fairly easy to obtain.

Like turtles but can't have one? Want to help? MATTS accepts tax-deductable donations at MATTS, P.O. Box 22321, Baltimore, MD 21203. Our adoptions program is funded by donations only, and we find homes for over 100 animals a year.
