My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Optimus is a 1 1/2 year old black male with cropped and standing ears. He is just now reaching his full size of 33" at the shoulders and about 130 pounds. He was just recently neutered so he had plenty of time to fill out and is a very healthy muscular boy. He is all black with a great patch of white on his chest and very cool white toes. He does have cropped ears, but they were done well and are very long and stand up on their own. In the three weeks he has been with us, Optimus has undergone an amazing transformation. In spite of his size, he is a big baby at heart and his first couple of days were pretty stressful (mainly for him, but for us too). But since then, he has settled in far better and faster than we could have imagined, let alone hoped for. Optimus spends a lot of time with a pack of three Akitas and does very well with them. He and the youngest Akita have become good buddies and Optimus has no problem being submissive to the smaller (70 lb) dog. He can be a bit on the jealous side and will force his way between the people and the other dogs if they are getting attention. He would do well in a multi-dog house so long as the people were prepared for his insistence of being the center of affection He would do also do great in a house where he is the only dog, but not one where he is left by himself for long stretches on an everyday basis. Although it is only one, Optimus has shown absolutely no interest in the cat that he often sees. That cat lives with the Akitas so it is used to dogs, but I would say he is cat friendly. He has also chosen to ignore the reptiles. In the short time he has been here, we have been able to go from needing to be crated to being able to be left alone for 7 or 8 hours with almost no issue. One day he did remind me that he is still a puppy and that shoe will never be the same again. Since then, with all the shoes safely put away, we are incident free. He is also perfectly housebroken with no accidents at all. Optimus loves to play and would do best in a home that is active. He is, for a Dane, a high energy dog and will happily play with a person or Akita for as long as they will. He has shown to be good at fetching, but not so great at giving the stick back. He will horseplay as gentle or rough as you want and is very good at backing down as soon as you ask him to. Optimus has a giant head and mouth to match. He has a very dry mouth for a Dane, unless he has just been in the water bowl and then for a few minutes, all bets are off. He will take small morsels of food from our hands or fork with a surprising amount of grace. Unfortunately, that grace is not comprehensive. He is a total bull in a china shop and often has no idea where his feet and very sharp elbows are. Optimus also is spatially challenged when it comes to sitting down or laying down. It seems like he has no idea where his back half is going to end up and that is usually fine, but just like many danes, Optimus loves being in contact with us and will try to lay down next to us, but will often end up all the way on top of us. Leash walking, much like everything else, has improved dramatically over the past few weeks. He is still enthusiastic on lead, but not aggressive in any way and will respond to a few commands, although not always the first time. We have not encountered small dogs yet, but his original owners reported that he did fine with them at the dog park. Optimus came from a home with two young children and has met several since he came to us. He does well with children, but since he has no clue how big he his or where he is swinging his really strong tail, it can be a little intimidating for some kids. Optimus is going to make someone or family a phenomenal companion and friend. He just wants to be part of a pack and will return the affection tenfold. As he finishes puberty and settles into a new home, he will finish his maturation into a very good boy.
