My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

One of my volunteer parents spotted Lucy in the school parking lot and called me in the clinic because she knew that I had rescued some animals in the past. When I went out I found this emaciated little dog, so ravaged w/mange that she had no hair, shivering in the cold and so scared so wouldn’t come close to me. Lucy had open, bleeding wounds going down her spine and also on her face with infected scabs over some of her wounds. She quickly ate the food I gave her but ran away when I tried to get close to her. I had never seen a dog in such terrible condition and was literally haunted by her. We were just about to leave for Christmas break so one of the parents & I went to the school every day to leave food & water for Lucy and waited to see if we could spot her. Unfortunately, she stayed out there in the freezing cold weather during the holidays and managed to survive. When we got back to school in January, I spotted her at a convenience store, eating chicken bones someone had given her. She looked like she had gained some weight and was much less afraid of me. I was finally able to catch her and took her straight to the vet.

Lucy has the type of mange that is not contagious to other dogs or humans but the vet says it is also harder to get rid of. I have had her for three weeks and it is amazing what a different girl she is now. She has gained weight, grown back a lot of hair and all her cuts are healed. She has a lot of energy, is jumping, playing, and getting into things, like a typical one year old puppy should be. The vet says she has made tremendous progress but may need months of treatment before the mange is totally gone. She may have some scars left from the wounds on her face and back but we are hoping that with time, she will heal completely and all her hair will grow back. Lucy gets along great with other dogs and loves people, including children. Although she will rough-house with my husband, she is gentle with my 3 year old granddaughter. She is not food aggressive, but is sneaky and has stolen some treats from my dogs when she gets a chance!
