My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gender: Female
Age: 4
Personality: Dixie is the most fun dog who has excess energy for play. Dixie came to us when her original family was moving to Australia. They had fully intended to take Dixie with them, but she developed a condition which required her to be on Prednisone for a three month period, and the quarantine period in Australia requires a new dog arriving in the country to be quarantined for three months and they will not give medications during this period. And so they sadly left her behind with us. Dixie had gone blind at age 9 months due to juvenile cataracts and just like many before her, her sight was fully restored when we had cataract surgery done on her. She will require drops on an ongoing basis, and 6 month follow ups at the eye specialist in San Diego. Dixie loves to play. Dixie lives to play. Dixie loves fetch and tug. She is very vocal while playing but it is all talk and nothing else. She is fully crate trained and housetrained. She is a big girl and gained 10 pounds while on her Prednisone treatment and so we are working on lots of exercise. Dixie does have vet issues and does not like going to the vet visit at all and so often does require a muzzle for the visit but she is learning that her muzzle is associated with lots of praise and treats just prior to placement and once removed. Dixie will likely be best as an only dog and no kids please. Dixie is such a fun girl and everyone who meets her falls in love but she will require someone committed to consistent and firm love. We prefer placing Dixie in the San Diego area if at all possible
Issues: Dixie needs a dog savy adopter who is committed to continuing her consistent work she has done on training to not be reactive to new situations. Because she had been blind (now fully sighted) she developed some reactive barking that she has learned to keep in check with clicker training but she needs consistency to continue her progress. Dixie will need an experianced dog person to continue working with her.
Dixie's Story:
Dixie is a big girl with a big heart and tons of energy to play full out. Dixie is one of the most playful dogs I have fostered in 10 years.
